I have been working at IG Group full-time

    Pros

Access to latest technologies, regularly pushing the technical boundaries with suppliers as the flag bearer, modern and fun office with excellent amenities. Competitive pay and benefits, close to Gym.

    Cons

The fast pace is often at the compromise of technical training and staff growth is limited, lack of or limited planning for projects and a 'just make it work' approach. IT staff participate in on call work with time in lieu as compensation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest more in your staff, treat them as your greatest assets and as people.

I worked at IG Group full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Very pretty office, plus all the nice IT company perks: fruit, Friday beers (well, once a month), pool table, etc. Good social scene: drink, parties etc. Opportunities to learn, especially for beginners. Deadlines nearly non-existent in some projects. Big bonuses and regular pay hikes, although the base salaries are pretty low. Very easy to get promoted (and demoted).

    Cons

Catty, stressful environment with a culture of blaming, finger-pointing and brown-nosing. Thriving there is more of a matter of marketing yourself than producing good code. Lots of stuck-up people, in some teams more than in others. Micromanagement endemic, again only in some teams. Some mediocre staff who have managed to build themselves a niche and seems to be there since about forever. Not fully agile: QA somewhat disconnected from the building process. Systematic character assassination of every developer who has left spontaneously. Frequent firings of people although, as far as I've witnessed, only as a last resort.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Modernise. Some of the procedures used, both technical and managerial, are jurassic.

I have been working at IG Group

    Pros

Pay and perks are comparably good. Occasionally get the odd bottle of champagne when business goes well. No expense spared with on the Christmas parties.

    Cons

Staff are expected to work long hours, including regular Friday nights and weekends on call.
There is an emphasis on projects to deliver on time even if the quality is incredibly bad.
Very few good Team Leaders, and lots of overseas staff. Not a professional culture.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It might help to have formal dress instead of people wearing jeans/t-shirts and trainers.

I worked at IG Group full-time for more than a year

    Pros

IG Group use cutting-edge technology, and staff are meant to have time to keep their skills up-to-date, but the reality doesn't happen often. I was able to pick up some new skills. There's free fruit daily and free drinks once a month. The office is new and conveniently located and in the square mile, so it is easy to get to. Overall, most people are friendly, but there is a clique culture and some staff do not act professionally.

    Cons

Tight deadlines meant working long hours and over Christmas and New Year's Eve as the company had poor planning. Staff not recognised for doing hard work and long hours, and there are not any career progression prospects. Staff seem to be treated the same, irrelevant if one colleague has a couple years of experience and another has over 12 years of experience. Progression, more than anything, seems to be related to who has been at the company the longest or who fits into the "old boy's club". Hours are also 9:00-6:00, and they are not very flexible.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at staff career progression and recognise staff for doing hard/good work, especially when meeting your difficult deadlines due to lack of planning at the top. I would have stayed on had I been able to progress.
