I worked at IG Group full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Hiring individuals based on a good fit meant many positive work relationships and individuals with similar focus. Good motivation levels that inspired. While more structure to the hierarchy has developed over the years, management are still approachable and willing to listen. Extra hours are expected but generally recognised.

    Cons

Communication wasn't always as good as it could have been, changes explained as they happened. Promotion opportunities limited, many young and talented individuals have moved on as a result, top management seemingly unwilling to address this.

    Pros

The best thing is people. There you meet friends, not just colleagues. Friends from different nationalities and with different cultural background. I like this, but you can find this in every global company I think.

    Cons

The worst culture ever, blaming, pointing at people and shooting as soon as they become inconvenient to the wind of power of senior managers. The majority of the employees leaves in one year. There are teams and departments completely re-built for the high turn over, as all the employees left in three months!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Question yourself.

I worked at IG Group full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

IG attracts and relies on a mainly talented workforce. Free drinks once a month, free fruit everyday and the opportunity to travel to some of their 16 international offices, in some departments. A friendly workplace, modern offices and great roof-gardens with brilliant view of the Thames, both East and West. IG invest heavily in technology and maintain a cutting-edge and reliable infrastructure within the business. Excellent place to gain exposure to a 'big' company that still enjoys a smaller, less-corporate feel.

    Cons

Rampant dream-selling and lack of management coherency power high staff turnover. Those that stay are typically less ambitious and see comfort preferable to career progression. Demotivating and repetitive work with very limited training on offer. Pay is on the lower side of market rates.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Micromanagement is rife, save for the odd diamond in the rough. Kill that culture and let your staff spread their wings. Engage more - you seem aloof.

    Pros

IG looks after staff fairly well and the benefits and facilities around the office are good. If you deliver, you can be rewarded well. The company works hard to maintain the quality of it's products and brand values which is reflected in the corporate culture. IG can be slow to adapt to new technologies and ideas

    Cons

There is a hierarchy and a gulf between staff and senior management. There is another gulf between technology and the business functions and it can seem at times that it's two separate companies you're hearing about. Because of high staff retention over the years in certain areas, it can be clicky. It's a professional, well oiled machine and that doesn't suit everyone's working style, particularly if you hate the idea of being a cog in a wheel.

I worked at IG Group full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

IG Group use cutting-edge technology, and staff are meant to have time to keep their skills up-to-date, but the reality doesn't happen often. I was able to pick up some new skills. There's free fruit daily and free drinks once a month. The office is new and conveniently located and in the square mile, so it is easy to get to. Overall, most people are friendly, but there is a clique culture and some staff do not act professionally.

    Cons

Tight deadlines meant working long hours and over Christmas and New Year's Eve as the company had poor planning. Staff not recognised for doing hard work and long hours, and there are not any career progression prospects. Staff seem to be treated the same, irrelevant if one colleague has a couple years of experience and another has over 12 years of experience. Progression, more than anything, seems to be related to who has been at the company the longest or who fits into the "old boy's club". Hours are also 9:00-6:00, and they are not very flexible.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at staff career progression and recognise staff for doing hard/good work, especially when meeting your difficult deadlines due to lack of planning at the top. I would have stayed on had I been able to progress.
