I have been working at IMEC (Belgium) full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

For PhD researchers: A big company with many advanced facilities/resources/backup for the microelectronic researches, which is tremendously advantageous over the most of school environment. Projects can be very close to industry which can be very beneficial for your carrier development later on.

    Cons

Be very careful about the project you choose in imec. Only core projects which is related to advanced microelectronic processing/concept gets the resources. You need an internal people inside to know the situation. Another drawback is the dynamics of the projects. Imec gets the fund mostly from industrial partners, which means the continuity of the researches or resources isn’t the case here. Once partners show no interest in a project, the project could lose the focus or even terminated in short time.

I worked at IMEC (Belgium) full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good work-life balance. Facility-wise, one of the best places to do research in the semiconductor field. Excellent training programs are offered to the personnel (improving personal skills, IT, technical, ... ). Great cafeteria.

    Cons

Lack of own focus and vision: rather follows what industrial partners want. Lack of budget for conference traveling. The practice of personnel rating (scores given at performance reviews) is questionable for morale and team spirit. Not much career possibilities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Open communication. Force your managers (who only became managers because they joined imec from the beginnings) to take classes in management and (real) leadership. Remove the personnel rating.

I worked at IMEC (Belgium) as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Interesting research opportunities and a good work environment. Little to no stress (although this isn't always positive).

    Cons

Little to no feedback on your performance. Everyone seems to be mostly focused on their own research and so you do have little guidance. More could be achieved by adding a bit more structure and clear goals.
