Good pay and benefits compared to other private companies in the area.

Electronics Technician (Current Employee) Halifax, NS (Canada)

ProsGood working hours, unless your a shift work employee. Pay is satisfactory and benefits are quite good.

ConsTypical union type environment, seniority always trumps ability. Old fashioned when it comes to working hours, no flexability and you'd better not be even a minute late.

Advice to Senior ManagementFlexable hours and more opportunity for union employees would go a long way. Review pay scales, why does a non-skilled/educated employee make near the same wage as educated/skilled ones. Pay skilled people more and they will stay with the company.

    Constant disappointment

Mechanical Engineer (Current Employee) Halifax, NS (Canada)

ProsYou do get to work on aircraft.
If you put in a lot of personal effort, you can learn some neat stuff.

ConsThe company pretends that it is in the big leagues, but in reality it is barely making it into the sandbox.
Most of the work is tedious and boring.
Internal procedures are set up to make efficiency impossible.
Instead of concentrating on quality repair design, management would rather copy old designs and complete the bare minimum documentation to get by.
It could be an interesting job, but unfortunately the company manages to suck all of the fun out of it.
The benefits are terrible. Pay is not great.
No feedback is provided in regards to performance.
No opportunities for training or professional development.

Advice to Senior ManagementMaking a flaky, feel-good newsletter does not count as real communication.
Some actual leadership and direction within the company would do a world of good!
Try treating your employees like real people - show them some respect.

    Cost Plus Environment

Aerospace Engineer (Former Employee) Halifax, NS (Canada)

ProsYou are working on aerospace equipment - helicopters and aircraft.
Some of it is older military stuff with full drawing sets which is a wonderful thing to have when solving problems and doing mods.
    Great customers - DND.
It provides a good supplement to your military pension.
Stable employment if you smile a lot and don't upset anybody.

ConsIt is a cost plus environment so most schedules are pretend and job skills are not that necessary.
Employees often times have to break the rules in order to do their jobs right or get something done. Very nerve wracking. People spend too much energy avoiding decisions and covering their butts.
Elaborate QA system is not effective and extremely unresponsive to change.
As a taxpayer it is disheartening to see so much of our money being spent in so many useless ways.

Advice to Senior ManagementActually start striving for the organizational excellence that is written about in the promotional literature.Focus on developing the worldclass knowledge that will win contracts without having to depend on the regional offsets card.
At the more nuts and bolts level, switch to having managers and their reports agreeing on SMART goals as the basis for personal evaluations. Both will have a clearer understanding of what it means to do a good job. A job that would end up supporting the aforementioned big picture goals.
And don't do anything you wouldn't want published in the Globe and Mail.

Trying to look like a worldclass company.

Senior Mechanical Engineer (Former Employee) Halifax, NS (Canada)

ProsInteresting work to do. Lots of problems that need to be solved.

ConsIt is a large company with poorly executed processes. As a result the patina of competence becomes more important than the actual ability to get things done properly. There seems to be a lack of interest in resolving problems caused by poorly executed processes. The backdoor methods have become the only way to get things done.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to make the things more real. Actually try to be worldclass. Speak the truth.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
