Good company to work for if you're not too worried about career progression

Engagement Manager (Current Employee)
Parsippany, NJ

I have been working at IMS Health full-time for more than 3 years

Pros1) Not too much bureaucracy on the consulting side
2) Decent compensation package

Cons1) No real innovation or market leading strategies
2) No real career path defined within consulting/services
3) Constant reshuffling of organization without any clear definition as to goal

Advice to Senior ManagementBring a robust career planning process to bear so that employees can see a path for growth. Find ways of fostering innovation rather than sticking with the tried and true, and provide incentives to consultants who get the job done more profitably.

This company has a long way to go.

Client Service Analyst (Current Employee)
Parsippany, NJ

I have been working at IMS Health full-time for more than 5 years

Pros- Working with some talented people
- Good work-life balance for me personally
- Commute

Cons- Employee morale has plunged since the company went private - management has become covert in its strategies and plans for its employees for the future.
-Training opportunities are not the best. In-person training has been substituted with generic, forgettable e-learning
- Limited growth opportunities - there aren't very many new job opportunities at the company (particularly the Parsippany office) and it is rare to here of people getting promotions
- Compensation is below industry standard - the company has taken advantage of the economic climate to strip down to nothing, like someone else has posted as well. Prospective employees should consider that it will take quite a while to get to a more competitive salary.
- Each department/client group is run very differently. Some groups are flexible. Some rigid. It varies quite a bit.
- Seasoned veterans make it difficult for the company to break from its antiquated ways - the company needs new blood and new ideas. Employees that have worked at the company too long may not be able to think outside the walls of IMS
- Stale workload since only higher-level or favored employees are put on new projects

Advice to Senior ManagementShare information regarding the state of the company with employees. Invest in good talent and properly reward high performers. Give employees a challenging workload and allow them opportunities for growth.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Upsetting

Senior Manager (Former Employee)
Parsippany, NJ

I worked at IMS Health full-time for more than 10 years

ProsThe people you work with day to day .

ConsTPG and management. Sr. Mgt scrambles to make every dollar, unfortunately Pharma is not buying. They are trying to put a consulting practice in place by devaluing the data assets and masking the true results with a pretty package and bow. The way they are making money is by cutting the staff to the bone leaving a skeleton crew here in the US. and outsourcing to affiliates in other countries. They actually boost about this to US employees......because you are on the team until you are not.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou are only in this for the money not the advancement of health. Capitolsm is great when everyone shares in the success, reward your US employees up and down the line and you will succeed beyond your dreams.

Collaborative workplace, with a great training program for new employees.

Senior Client Service Manager (Current Employee)
Parsippany, NJ

I have been working at IMS Health

ProsGreat place to learn about the pharma industry, and the market research data available.

ConsNot lots of room to grow, very few managers. Salaries, not consistent with the pharma industry.

Advice to Senior ManagementLook for more opportunities to recognize and reward employees.

Frustrating

Data Management (Current Employee)
Parsippany, NJ

I have been working at IMS Health

ProsSeems there's always a party. There is great concern for everyone being happy and having an afternoon treat, and little concern for how well they do their job. Great place to work if you need to run out five times a week to take your kid somewhere.

ConsLong term employees with the most knowledge have been let go and replaced by low cost and low quality imports. English is a second language. Management is more interested in creating their own little fiefdoms than in running and supporting the organization. Power is everything, especially at the VP level. IMS does not (ever) improve from within, they just continue to buy other organizations. Clients constantly (and justifiably) complain about data issues.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf the economy should improve, there will be no one left who even knows how to turn on the lights. It's too late.

Overall little substance but great form.

Data Management (Current Employee)
Parsippany, NJ

I have been working at IMS Health

ProsVery accomodating to personal work schedules, depending on your supervisor.
Mostly pleasant co-workers with friendly environment.
Frequent celebrations and parties (bread and circuses anyone?)

ConsSevere brain drain over the past few years with knowledgeable and experienced employees replaced through attrition and favoritism by less qualified individuals, both on-shore and off-shore.
Data created is consistent, but not accurate--this is the driving force behind management.
Management by bullying is the norm at high levels.

Advice to Senior ManagementSit up and take notice. Try interviewing the individuals below senior management to get at the core of what is going to bring IMS down.

A good place to be for pharma consulting

Senior Consultant (Current Employee)
Parsippany, NJ

I have been working at IMS Health

ProsIMS is one of the biggest players in pharmaceutical consulting, and has been great career started for me. You get exposure to some the biggest companies and get to work with some very experienced consultants.

ConsIMS has had poor results with cross-practice projects and collaboration, especially within consulting. What this means for a recent college graduate is that your experiences will be limited to within your practice. Make sure you like what you're signing up for.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease financial support for pursuing graduate degrees. My practice has lost a lot of good people who go back to school, only to join competitors.

An Insight on IMS Health and the Significance of Data Integrity

Research Analyst (Current Employee)
Parsippany, NJ

I have been working at IMS Health

ProsIMS Health is the global pharmaceutical market research leader, therefore the experience gained by working for IMS can create many future opportunities. The health care benefits are no-cost coverage which is always a plus. Furthermore, positions in the Data Integrity department require very fulfilling analytical work (think puzzle solving). Since IMS is a knowledge oriented company, advancement is also knowledge oriented rather than seniority oriented.

ConsNothing internal comes to mind. However, externally, the clients tend to always question the data provided. Inquiries come in about data trends that are exemplary of competitive product switching, yet still clients will be in denial and question the data. For the most part, data integrity's job is to resolve data issues or validate data trends. Second, like in all companies there are some small adjustments that can be made to increase efficiency.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease efficiency by increasing server resources for data extractions vital to data integrity; eliminating the one day lag on most Toad extractions and the casual crashes while extracting.
