Though ING is a bank like any other, it's an interesting and challenging job if you pick the right department

    Product Manager (Former Employee)
    Brussels (Belgium)

Pros* If you work for the right departments, like the online banking department, the job can be very interesting and challenging
    * Work life balance is very good. You never work long hours or weekends. 35 days of paid holidays and bank holidays
    * My direct managers were very professional and I learned a lot from them. Though that depends on the department and a bit of luck
    * Many trainings to choose from
    * The offices are easy to reach in the center of Brussels

Cons* Too much procedures, policies, rules, forms and other types of red tape
    * Slow and political decision making. It takes ages to deliver a project
    * Very hierarchical. You often have to defend your ideas to multiple (disagreeing) levels of management
    * Too permissive of bad performers which discourages talented people to stay
    * It's hard to get a raise or a promotion unless you have a lot of patience
    * Most employees see ING as their job for life. It's almost as if working for a government organization

Advice to Senior ManagementCreate pockets inside the organization where policies are kept at a minimum, wages and promotions are given to talented risk takers, which will able to bring the company forward.

Nice place to work, though "people management" could do MUCH better.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Brussels (Belgium)

ProsGreat colleagues, many international opportunities if you're willing to make the necessary sacrifice, provides a lot of training in different domains (management, behavioural, language skills), good work-life balance.

ConsCertain corporate jobs centered in Amsterdam. Reduced budgets for international opportunities following the recent crisis. Salary package much lower than peers. Human Resource Management practically inexistant!

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on human capital by providing better accompaniment in light of recent / ongoing internal changes.

ConsNon-competitive environment, people don't seem motivated to make an extra effort

Not bad, not great - a somewhat bland experience

    Relationship Manager (Former Employee)
    Brussels (Belgium)

ProsGood name on a CV, I have had oportunities afterwards because people (in lesser industries) are somewhat impressed. Big company woldwide, opportunity to travel / live abroad (as I have). Great benefits once you get to the senior level. I have also seen senior people who travelled a lot throughout their career and had the chance to do something different every couple of years, ie go from corporate banking to real estate to cash management, and they seem to appreciate that - it's not something you can necessarily do everywhere.

ConsBureaucracy. Company is too big, no sense of urgency.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore training. Pay those who work hard better. Brighten up the dull work environment.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
