I worked at ITA Software as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Great work environment, nice atmosphere, great salary, good location close to Boston, very flexible hours, nice having an office which isn't open plan so you only share an office with 2-3 people max instead of 50 or so, also free drinks, snacks and food which makes people feel appreciated and looked after.
Great being part of a profitable company.

    Cons

Small teams, and also people brings dogs into work which would be better if they left them at home. But overall, few cons.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more business roles. Marketing, analysts, strategy, business development, etc

Great people, poor management, incredibly rigid in a dynamic market.

I have been working at ITA Software full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The engineers are quite good and passionate about what they are trying to do. One of the few places where there preferred programming language is Lisp, and the only company that tries to marry Lisp with Oracle! Healthcare benefits are terrific.

    Cons

Poor management, no professional growth potential. View of computing technology is anchored in the 1990's (at best).

I have been working at ITA Software as a contractor for more than 3 years

    Pros

Requirements of technology are taken into account.
Team of highly talentented engineers of all experience levels.
Focus on high quality software production without being process obsessed.

    Cons

Quality of lower-level management is lower than that of engineering team.
Engineering requirements traditionally trump management requirements, frustrating managers.
Promoting engineers into management does not always yield great results.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep looking for better technical managers :)

I worked at ITA Software as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

The engineers (and others) are really friendly and chill. There is food everywhere. Can't say much about salary.

    Cons

The company is in Boston (smaller tech area), and I'm not sure if my review is applicable now that it has been acquired by Google since.

I have been working at ITA Software

    Pros

ITA is able to hire and retain some very smart people; it has rigorous hiring practices, which weeds out most unsuitable candidates. ITA's products are good, and its customers are generally satisfied. Salaries and benefits are better than most companies (even better than Google, which is about to acquire it). ITA is well known in the Boston area and in tech circles, so it's nice to have on your resume.

    Cons

Even though ITA is no longer a small start-up, it still acts like one. Ad hoc policies, red tape, and office politics sometimes interfere with doing the right thing for customers. ITA is a very engineering centric company; if you're not an engineer, be prepared to be a second class citizen in the organization. Mid level management is a joke, performance reviews (which are now done QUARTERLY) are a joke, and the HR department is below average for a company of this size. The company needs to improve QPX, because the gap between ITA and its competitors is quickly closing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pray Google doesn't clean house.

I have been working at ITA Software

    Pros

Little hassles. Perks are better than many, including the impending new owner. Good adoption of the trial-period employment practice. Pay is OK.

    Cons

Some projects have diffuse responsibility. Siloed departments with too much duplication. Factory-overseer micromanagement mentality. Too much ad-hoc everything. Disparate tools used even in the same department leads to duplication of effort. Ridiculously strict maintenance schedule makes everything take too long. No advancement for mid and senior technical staff. Favoritism. HR does well in general with surveys and the like, but falls down in handling specific issues. You must be both an academic and into "geek chic" to stomach the place. Loads of intellectual-bully juveniles given overly-long play on their leashes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Disallow meetings that don't have agendas produced in advance. Get a real conferencing system. Encourage respect for other people's time by being punctual and ending on time. Reduce reliance on hallway and ad-hock. Stop focusing on administrivia metrics and instead use sane, results-based critique. Middle management needs to learn how to trust employees to do their jobs.

    I worked at ITA Software

    Pros

It's a good place to be. People are discuss geeky things at lunchtime.

    Cons

I was an intern, and the technical lead left a week after I came. The project was drifting in random directions as the manager was not concerned with the technical aspects.

I have been working at ITA Software

    Pros

ITA treats its employees very well; salaries are high and benefits are better than the vast majority of companies, even in the Boston area. The company has a very good product and a lot of extremely smart people working for it. There is still a "start-up" feel to ITA, although it is becoming a large organization.

    Cons

Even though its growing, there is still a lot of "small company" ad-hoc stuff to work around. There aren't really a lot of avenues for advancement. QPX is the #1 product for domestic airfare search, but for how long? The company seems to be resting on its laurels more than it should, developing products that it can't sell.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus more on improving and marketing QPX and spend less money developing new products, or competitors will end up beating you eventually.
