Fair compensation, but company lack vision.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Fort Wayne, IN

ProsFair compensation, good benefits, generally good people to work with.

ConsSenior management often lacks good leadership abilities and relies on buzz-word business skills. Quite often, tools and polocies such as VBSS are applied to projects that they are not intended for. Engineering takes a back seat to these initiatives and the product/ project schedule and budget suffers.

Nice people with good benefits but pay lower than market average - lots of turnover for various reasons.

    Accountant (Former Employee)
    Fort Wayne, IN

ProsGood place to start a career; nice benefits, ok pay is livable but lower than market average (see cons below); mostly friendly people (with exceptions of course) and and good work environment; depending on which department in which you work there's not much required overtime, although it is available when necessary to complete projects when they are behind.

ConsVery little in the way of pay raises (they were eliminated the last year I was there). Poor upper management at the corporate level; they "do their own thing" without regard to how if affects the employees underneath them. Pay is somewhat lower than market average for any given position; lots of "forced retirement" of long-time employees and managers. Limited upward mobility due to "corporate restructuring" and other factors. I was "downsized" after coming back from a week of vacation, the same week I hit my 5th anniversary of employment with ITT.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart listening to the people under you, stop ignoring them and treating them like pawns... some of them are actually smarter and wiser than you are in certain areas. The corporate philosophy is "do the right thing always" yet in 5 years I repeatedly saw management fail to do what's right for the employees. Denise Ramos needs to GO because she's been there too long, time for some younger blood - get somebody with a firm grip on reality and a clue of how it really goes at the bottom of the food chain!!

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

No relationship between non-technical, upper management and technical, lower-to-midlevel work force.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Fort Wayne, IN

ProsGreat opportunity to learn cutting edge design, analysis, and manufacturing techniques for space based telescopes.
Pay and benefits are very competitive for the region.

ConsUpper-level managers are too non-technical for the business and are disconnected from workforce.
Mid-level managers tend to be empire builders and lead by personality (pushers).
Company has too many contentious factions for its size.

Advice to Senior ManagementUpper-level managers--get out of your offices regularly, walk around the floor, introduce yourselves, and have some conversations. You will meet some interesting people and understand your business better.

    Importance of an Educated Workforce.

    Hardware Designer (Former Employee)
    Fort Wayne, IN

ProsIn Fort Wayne at ITT CS, the people are friendly and easy to get along with. There hours are very flexible with no or little supervision. The work is rewarding because the engineer will have to work with every department to handle any problems. They are increasing research & development spending with lost of all JTRS contracts. The CS division has bought multiple defense companies to broaden their product base since the SINCGARS radios are now obsolete. People work at ITT CS for most of their careers since it is one of three defense companies within Fort Wayne. A person needs to be very self-motivated. A promotion is pretty much guaranteed after two years for engineers.

ConsThey do not recognize the difference in pay between engineering degree and technology degree. A person with technology degree will get paid the same amount as an engineer. In fact, their duties will be the same. Because of this, their pay rate is compared to technology degrees. Work load is usually +40 hours. Since they only assign one engineer to each circuit board, then this person has to handle all the problems with project engineers non-existant.
They don't educate their workforce. They will pay for formal classes at a univeristy, but the small town can not support higher level of classes needed. The senior engineers still use slide-rules and don't know what Matlab is.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe willing to educate your work force. New engineers need a mentor.

    Mixed review on ITT

    Senior Electrical Engineer (Current Employee)
    Fort Wayne, IN

ProsThe work life balance is one of the best reasons to work for ITT. Fort Wayne (CS Division) is also a cheap city to live in. Most jobs do not involve a lot of stress since the development cycles are long when compared to a commercial industry. There are a number of programs one can work on.

ConsIt easy easy to get lost in the crowd since ITT is a larger company. Pay is not linked to performance. The average increase is 3% per year. Employees are rewarded with higher pay for going to other companies such as Raytheon and coming back.

Advice to Senior ManagementSenior mgmt needs more well thought out strategies.

Short but honest opinion about ITT Corp.

    Software Engineer I (Current Employee)
    Fort Wayne, IN

ProsThe work can be very engaging.

ConsIt is a big company, and with many big companies - you can get lost in the shuffle. Recognition is hard to come by even when management is aware of the effort.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake care of the employees that work for you! With average yearly salary increases of 3%, it is hard to stay with the company and not lose money.

    Good company to work for

    Senior Engineer (Current Employee)
    Fort Wayne, IN

ProsGreat people to work with. Good benefits and fair compensation.

ConsLong design cycles that drag on forever for the space side of the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementBetter strategy needed. Stop it with all of the process crap already. Let's get some new work in here. This place is crowded, time to expand.
