I worked at ITT Corp as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Very friendly, extremely helpful, everyone around you wants to help you move on in your professional life with a lot of different technical fields. ITT was willing to do anything to help me learn about the field I wanted to have a career in.

    Cons

Not many challenges that I can think of from being there. At times the work was a little dry but it was for the most part always fun to be a part of something new.

I worked at ITT Corp full-time

    Pros

    the work is incredibly interesting
company is staffed by experts in their fields
    the pay is quite competitive
Rochester is a great family town

    Cons

even for a defense contractor, the bureaucracy is stifling; internal processes are as archaic as most of its buildings; and company leadership and internal business systems are set up only to identify new revenue, with almost no thought to promoting internal innovation, increased efficiency, employee satisfaction, or entrepreneurialism

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

refocus some of your attention on how your team delivers, how they promote, and how you can support them to allow them to do their jobs better

    Miserable Place to Work

    I worked at ITT Corp

    Pros

Rochester is a convenient, reasonably priced place to live. The work is technically challenging and about as high tech as it gets. The people are top-notch.

    Cons

Upper management completely out of touch with the customer base and the "business" they are in. They are completely incompetent and out for their next performance appraisal and promotion. There is no future vision other than the next quarter. Fear of layoffs is pervasive and the place has a death-watch feel to it. There is absolutely no loyalty to the employees while they continually espouse wanting to grow employee loyalty to the company - it's a one way street. There is no concern for or money spent on employee development, professional association involvement, IR&D, facilities upgrades and pay raises are miserly - the list is endless. Benefits continue to erode year after year. In 1-3 years it will dry up and blow away.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get out! The people brought in from Ft Wayne do not know the business or the customer. They have absolutely no confidence from the larger technical community and the customer base in general. The business relationships are bad and deteriorating.

I have been working at ITT Corp

    Pros

Competitive salary and benefits, especially for new hires moving in from other geographical regions. The cost of living in Rochester is very low, and the housing market is steady. As an engineer in this geographical region, ITT is one of few stable job opportunities that still affords a comfortable lifestyle. Taking paid time off is easy with very little hassle. ITT consistently makes money even in this harsh economy. New hires can expect a great way to learn how the industry works and build valuable experience before moving on.

    Cons

Management offers few opportunities for professional growth (travel, conferences, etc). The relatively high average age means lots of middle managers. The culture of jaded ex-Kodak workers can be depressing. Management is not interested in employee wellness, as evidenced by the health plan and lack of wellness-based incentives. The Hawkeye plant downtown is in a downright dangerous neighborhood. Violence outside the office and vandalism to employee property is a not so rare occurrence. The way management tries to downplay it is insulting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Move the heck out of Hawkeye and foster a culture of professional and personal growth if you want to attract and retain top talent.

    I worked at ITT Corp

    Pros

Cost of living in the Rochester area is pretty low. This allows for your salary to go far. The suburbs of Rochester are very nice and family oriented. It is a good jumping off point for your career. To get a good idea of how the industry works.

    Cons

The environment is on the depressing side. The same can be said of the workers there many of whom are jaded ex-Kodakers.. There is limited information sharing and few know how to really work together. Sometimes deadlines and expectations push the outcome more than they ought to. The location is pretty terrible verging on dangerous.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pick a new location and have a nicer enviroment this may draw better employees to the company.

    I worked at ITT Corp

    Pros

ITT overall well manged company in terms of financial strength. May be attractive to those new to aerospace work environment. Benefits program fairly good.

    Cons

Space systems business not growing at this time. Tough shift work hours required. Benefits gradually being reduced.
Lower level (supervisor) selected based on politics and not techinical competence. Large layoff in Feb. 2006 resulted in lower morale and workload increase for those remaining at company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have lost some very experienced talent due to retirements and layoffs. Replace incompetent supervisors in test dept. and treat employees with more respect. Get them the help they need to do work required.
