I have been working at IUPUI part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

IUPUI has nice facilities, cancer center and some top notch investigators. Good efforts to provide opportunities for good work-life balance.

    Cons

As a faculty member for the past 6 years, I do not feel particularly valued at IUPUI. There are problems with pay equity among departments and for women. Part-time employees have inadequate health/retirement benefits. Primary focus is how much money you are bringing in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Using a business model to run the university research program will harm innovation and kill morale.

I worked at IUPUI full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

There's a lot of talent on the campus and some very important and interesting work being done.

    Cons

State cuts to education have made money scarce. Anything that brings in money is fairly safe (research). Anything that doesn't, will get squeezed (anything student related).

IU/IUPUI is a huge bureaucracy with deep political divisions. If you're hired into a group that's along one of those fault lines or which has become a political football, it can be a miserable experience working there.

In the bigger divisions, those working with the students or in daily operations are prevented from making strategic decisions through official channels due to the crippling bureaucracy around them. The only people able to initiate meaningful change are so high up in the organization that they're isolated from daily operations and student life. So change happens in secret or out of nowhere from well-intentioned, but often, out of touch leadership.

Many divisions that face and support the students are treated as a necessary evil that's drawing valuable resources away from research.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Flatten the organizational charts. Eliminate unnecessary procedures (the forms committee?). Get to know a few students and a few people that work with them.

Growing every year. More and more people want to be a part of the various opportunities thru both Indiana and Purdue quality level education and faculty

    Cons

Commuter campus, so parking during school hours can be hectic, just allow more time.

    Pros

The heath and vacation benefits are excellent if you are a professional. There is virtually minimal micro managing in a professional position. IUPUI fosters innovation and creativity. If you don't posses that, this is not the environment for you.

    Cons

Salaries are below the market valuation in For-Profit atmospheres. The change for advancement can be limited.
