    Pros

Great employee benefits despite the mediocre pay.

    Cons

My supervisor/mentor was extremely unprofessional. Inappropriate jokes (usually of a sexual nature) were an every day occurrence. This PI fostered a toxic work environment. Even if I expressed my concerns, nothing ever changed. When I finally decided to move on, I was denied a letter of recommendation in retaliation. That job haunts me to this day.

    Advice to Management

Please please PLEASE, make it a priority to monitor the behavior of faculty members. Many act as if they could get away with murder as OEO cleans up the mess and sweeps it under the rug. As a result of this experience, I have no desire to even attempt to persue my acedemic goals and my personal life and well-being has been negatively affected as well. Look out for the little guys, especially young women in science, but all lab techs hoping to learn properly from their mentor(s).

    Pros

Many opportunities to learn with education benifit

    Cons

Research associate is considered as Academic, but with not much rights. No definite vacation time other than what your principal investigator allows. Working days, nights, weekends, Xmas and new year days (like a slave) with low pay. They eliminate your job when grant money runs out, but, will not give you RIF status to help you reemploy with IUPUI.

    Advice to Management

PI's mainly use taxpayer grant money from NIH. Therefore, they should follow standard work rules and should not abuse their workers to work their weekends and holidays without proper compensation.
