I worked at Idol Minds (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great hiring lead to many lasting friendships. Awesome projects and flexible hours. Being a small studio, Idol Minds possesses the ability to transition employees should a project falter, this is a VERY good thing to be able to do in the games industry.

    Cons

Be prepared to work weekends. This is not a problem with Idol Minds, this is just the way the industry works. Not a lot of out of work activities lead by management. If you want culture, you have to make it!

    Advice to Management

Listen to employees more, and be willing to spend more time with them, not just hovering at their desk. There are benefits to being a small company, use these benefits to your advantage!

    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Idol Minds full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

People there are great work around. Diverse range of projects. Art style, tech, and type of genre.

    Cons

Very very poor planning. This has lead to numerous amounts of cancellations of many games. Most of the time you"ll be lucky even to release a game and have credit. Pay is at average to mediocre. Don't expect to be rewarded if you work hard.

    Advice to Management

Fix planning and lock down projects!

I worked at Idol Minds full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The founder and technical director of Idol Minds, Mark Lyons, is an extremely talented visionary with his feet planted firmly on the ground. Business has been around since 1997 which is rare in the indy games biz. Great perks and benefits and Louisville is rated #1 place to live in the nation!

    Cons

Occasional crunch periods are the norm. Like all indy game studios, projects are always at risk of being cancelled.

    Pros

Good co-workers, great benefits, okay range of games to work on

    Cons

Bad management, zero concept of scheduling, constant crunch, frequent layoffs, all eggs in one basket (sony)

    Advice to Management

Fire the owner as a manager, fire the VP, hire managers that actually have managerial training and experience. Stick to schedules...after learning to schedule.

    Pros

    Cons

Company has folded and revived at least 3 times. No reliable back-up plan when it really mattered.
