I worked at Illinois Department of Corrections full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The pay and benefits are the only reason to consider a career with IDOC.

    Cons

The leadership is rife with political appointees. Many are inept, incompetent, and corrupt. The morale is very poor and most employees detest their job. Working in security exposes you to violence daily and many of your coworkers are either corrupt or incompetent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The systemic problems are so many and varied they would take months to discuss in detail.

I worked at Illinois Department of Corrections

    Pros

Pay, benefits,no strike, no lock out, 30 and out program.

    Cons

Possible mandate, poor management, at time poor union, two-faced staff at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stand behind your staff just don't say your going to! Also to the union don't pick and choose who you fight for at 100% of your resources. Use 100% all the time everyone pays dues. Management remember the front line staff is the ones doing the work that the decisions you make right and usually wrong so when they do the job don't look down or punish for doing the job you pay them to do and them blame them for the mistakes you made!

I have been working at Illinois Department of Corrections

    Pros

Pay and Benefits and with the current lack of staff, you can make your own salary with the unlimited overtime

    Cons

Lack of support from upper managemnet, very political as far upper management is concerned, expect us to "do more with less"(Direct quote from the Director) lack of staffing, fear of retaliation from management for doing your job when it comes to one on one conflict with the inmates. inmates being treated with more respect and dignitny than front line staff, management afraid of the inmates being mad or upset if they don't get their way

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Grow a backbone, these guys are in here to be punished for a crime, not lounge aroudn all day being treated like they are at summer camp.
