I have been working at Illinois State Police full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Depending on your specialty, the work is interesting, varied and significant. The vast majority of bench workers are ethical and conscientious about their work. You can choose your work schedule and hours, pay is good and pervasive crime gives job security. Some managers are well-meaning and do the best they can when allowed.

    Cons

High stress- mostly from management and quality assurance. Our modest pension has not been funded by the state causing a crisis that makes its future uncertain. Funded by the state, there are no frills in equipment, professional enrichment, social events, etc. Low morale.

    Advice to Management

Upper management is stubbornly unchangeable. Experienced analysts constantly exit due to situations that could be easily remedied. But like most large municipal environments, no one seems to care or have enough power to improve things.

I have been working at Illinois State Police full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people, strong mission, flexible schedule, generous time off, decent salary, free secured parking which is a huge benefit when working in the city of Chicago.

    Cons

Innovation is non existent, they want ideas but will not take initiative to attempt to implement them. Mid level supervisors have poor people skills. Division is underfunded and understaffed. No attempt to give incentives to retain valuable staff

    Advice to Management

Care less about iso and care more about the mission and the staff performing the work. Don't burden the talented employees and absolve bed behavior. This division can be amazing if you focus on the mission and staff instead of yourselves

I have been working at Illinois State Police full-time

    Pros

Working with the troopers to ensure that emergencies are handled promptly is a benefit. The troopers are very professional and will bend over backward to always lend a helping hand to the public in any way possible. Working with them is the only benefit to this job as their work ethic is inspiring and motivating.

    Cons

For the telecommunicators (dispatchers), there is no training program. Yes, for the position of trainee there is no training program (the state thought it was a waste of money, so it was cut years ago). The curriculum and training manuals provided by the state are all at least 8 years out of date. This includes the sections on how our software system, which was upgraded at the beginning of this year, operates. Because of this lack of structured training, it is next to impossible to learn this job. There are thousands of variables to every incident that may have to be dealt with, but the training doesn't cover that. Additionally, the people there focus on criticizing rather than assisting with situations, even life-threatening ones. They sit and criticize and focus on telling you how much more correct they were rather than dealing with the incident first. The supervisor encourages trainees to ask questions when they need help, but the actual trainers/telecommunicators just criticize you for not knowing something. They are very good at their jobs, but are not willing to train the trainees.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to retire. Little to no effort is put forth anymore and many management duties are passed down to others under the guise of "I'm in charge, so you have to do it."

  5. Great compensation, very "clicky" and politically correct to a fault

I worked at Illinois State Police full-time

    Pros

Compensation, variety of occupations to choose once employed. The vast majority of the employees are very honest and really do want to serve the people of Illinois.

    Cons

Divides everything by race/gender/sexual orientation and requires commanders to justify why they fail to promote someone from one of these groups (some people are more equal than others). Upper management is under the thumb of the Governor's office and goals and priorities can be changed in a moments notice.

    Advice to Management

Treat all people equally. You have a great group of people working for you, of all types and ethnicities.

I have been working at Illinois State Police full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Lots of talented people trying to do a good job. Most work together really well. You receive better training than many county and municipal police officers. Great salaries for this type of job.

    Cons

Upper management wants their egos stroked regularly. Their idea of diversity is a variety of different people telling them how smart they are.

    Advice to Management

Push decisions down to the lowest possible level. Allow your people to blossom. Stop thinking all good ideas originate in your office.

I have been working at Illinois State Police full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Like with any state job, it comes with good pay and benefits, relatively comfortable working conditions, and paid time off. Most positions are Union backed.

    Cons

Depends on the position. Some jobs are cake, while others are crazy demanding.

    Advice to Management

I know it trickles down from the top, but most managers are two-faced.

I worked at Illinois State Police full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    The salaries are very good.

    Cons

Training/continuing education for non-operations employees not budgeted for.

    Advice to Management

As with other organizations, would be helpful for upper management to value the input of those who report to them.
