    Great place to work

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Normal, IL

ProsIllinois State is a great place to work with endless potential. As a state job, you get many of the perks that most state jobs provide (medical, dental, life). The work/life balance is really commendable at Illinois State University. The upper management in most of the departments is definitely willing to give their employees some much needed time off. Since it is a university, there are constantly top talent being drawn towards positions at Illinois State, creating a diverse, articulate, and capable work force.

ConsIllinois State is in Normal, IL, which is a wonderful small midwestern town. However, many people who are from Chicago originally do not appreciate the slower pace.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the good work.

A place to explore the broad roles of your profession, while still getting big corporation benefits

Director of Technology (Current Employee) Normal, IL

ProsFlexibility to work across areas, with the benefits of a much larger company

ConsAdvancement is limited by your educational degree which is true at all Universities. There is only so far you can advance without a Masters degree and then to go higher a Ph.D and teaching experience

Advice to Senior ManagementYou do a wonderful job of outreach, but you are not often seen in the workplaces of your people. Go visiting and ask about what is good and what could be improved. Your people would give you valuable advice

An okay university that could be great if it seriously tried

Director of Development (Current Employee) Normal, IL

ProsPay and benefits are excellent. Like most academic environments, you're working with smart folks who (for the most part) care about making a difference in students' lives. Professional staff are generally allowed to manage their own time and achieve work/life balance. Plenty to do and get involved in (culturally and professionally) on campus. The campus is beautiful and a lot of improvements are underway. You can walk to a lot of new shops and restaurants in the renovated 'Uptown' Normal. Bloomington-Normal is an above average community in many ways -- driven by the presence of State Farm's corporate headquarters. Lots of shopping, restaurants, etc.

ConsLike most academic environments, there's plenty of self-serving bureaucracy to go around. Some professional staff completely miss the point that STUDENTS are the entire reason the University exists and education is the core mission. Everything else is secondary to that. REAL change doesn't seem to get addressed and there's a certain complacency with being mediocre (but a lot of talk about being great.) Trustees either don't want to know or don't have the sophistication to distinguish talk from from real action. You are either in or out with senior administration, meaning HARD questions don't get asked for fear of retribution. Once you're out you will literally be out.

Advice to Senior ManagementWeed out the slackers and don't be satisfied with mediocrity.

Needs leadership, vision, and communication help

    Human Resources (Former Employee)

ProsUpside potential from Extra Help to CS
    Expectation level fosters high productivity

    ConsLack of leadership initiative
Lack of action on communication of plans to enhance the department
6 month probationary period is standard

Advice to Senior ManagementThe department with which I worked needed leadership presence. An opportunity was given to a woman in January and she was let go in June. That doesn't seem like ample time to have a leadership strategy come to fruition. This department needs staffing, communication of expectations, and to advance beyond prehistoric policies and procedures.

    Great for student jobs

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsWhile working here over the summer as a student I found it to be a very great place to get my summer course work done while getting paid.

ConsThe position I had was mind numbing, and I think that in some cases, some positions were not necessary at all.

Advice to Senior ManagementBanning the internet to computers is really not that necessary.
