I worked at Independant Electricity System Operator as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Excellent work environment, intelligent coworkers, interesting subject matter, great compensation. Very relaxed work environment and a good work-life balance.

    Cons

Some of the work was a bit tedious, especially reporting. Some of the tools are in sore need of an updated. The work load is unbalanced; sometimes there is a lot of work, whereas other times there's nothing to do for a week at a time due to the adhoc nature.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring on some more technical talent to help upgrade the programs used. In particular, the business intelligence tools are old and poor.

I worked at Independant Electricity System Operator

    Pros

Excellent work life balance, lots of free time, little pressure, little overtime work, good job stability, conflict free environment, enjoyable co-workers.

    Cons

Relatively slow development - an addition to the power grid may take years to plan and implement, you may find that becomes less exciting.

I have been working at Independant Electricity System Operator

    Pros

Great pay, laid back work. Don't think there is many places more where I can make 6 figures for not doing much productful work. Amazing retirement package. Basically make 70% of the top 5 years avg. salary. OPG, Hydro One, City of Toronto pretty much offer the same package. All at the expense of the tax payer. Got to love it! Well as long as your working with them. Sorry private sector employs, better luck. Easy to get in if you know someone inside the company (ie. relative).

    Cons

It's unionized, so some might think negatively about it. Not much else. I guess nepotism is the other issue, but again if you know someone in there high up then you would be groomed to the position.

I have been working at Independant Electricity System Operator

    Pros

Very satisfied, good benefits, high salary, management is very supportive of future opportunities and increasing the education and leadership potential in employees, vacation is 4 weeks, employees very professioanl.

    Cons

growth is not always easy to achieve at IESO. There is a lot of nepotism and favouritism which causes dissatisfaction.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If the management wants the employees to remain and not leave the org they should allow for everyone to grow not just the blue eyed boys.

I worked at Independant Electricity System Operator

    Pros

    - they had flex hours which is standard at most companies i worked prior to this one
    - good social environment during lunch (bbq in the cafeteria during summer)
    - you are informed on what is going on around the company and the industry
    - they have lunch and learn sessions scheduled and you can register to learn more
    - compensation is fair
    - depending on the department, get a decent amount of work

    Cons

    - sometimes may to ask work depending on your team and management
    - many long term employees here who are used to working a certain style and stable environment
    - not as fast paced promotion style environment as some would like
    - company answers to the government, some may see this as a drawback
    - some may be turned off by the amount of rules and processes to get things down

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Engage the workforce more and offer benefits and compensation similar to other government corporations.
