    Pros

as the title of the review describes, the company has a great culture for its employees and I am very happy with the people I work with. There is a culture of teaching and learning from each other and that is highly encouraged.

    Cons

There needs to be career growth and advancement for employees, which is highly lacking....growth is none to minimal..

    Pros

Good health insurance benefits. Many employees would be willing to put members first if management provides consistent leadership and rewards effective work instead of busy work.

    Cons

Leadership has failed the company and the community. There is no consistent direction and CEO looks to blame consultants, employees, the economy and "an overly complicated health care system" instead of his inability to pick a strategy and lead dedicated employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is time to look at yourselves and stop blaming others. You have damaged the culture and employees are more concerned with figuring out how to protect their jobs than providing great service to members. Change the leadership which will change the culture and save a formerly great company.

Public gets red shirt treatment. Employees get pink slip treatment.

I worked at Independent Health full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Great benefits and employee perks.

    Cons

No appreciation for long-term, dedicated employees and there's no job security. They care more about their public image than how they treat their staff. Employees are made to feel "disposable". IH thinks nothing of taking your livelihood away. Management staff spend too much time in meetings instead of managing their staff. The original executive leadership group knew their stuff and treated employees with dignity and fairness. The current executive leadership group could care less about anyone but themselves and how they can increase their bonuses.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit listening to the hundreds of consultants dictating how to run your business, and start using your own knowledge and gut feelings to manage your teams. Treat employees as you would like to be treated, not like just another number.

    Pros

State of the art technology. The architecture this company is developing is what other health care plans strive to reach. Significant dollars invested in training this year.
Great mission. This company has a belief in bettering the health of every member.

    Cons

Sometimes the hours are a bit long. The company has a lot going on and it requires a lot of effort to get there.

I worked at Independent Health full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

In the early years (CEO FC) you could count on company paid training in your field to keep you at the top of your game combined with top-tier benefits (med, dental, eyes, STD, LTD, LI, pension, generous vacation/personal/sick days) made it a pleasure to come into work and be part of a team. Hi morale. Management took care in cultivating employees. Felt valued and appreciated.

    Cons

In the latter years (CEO MC) training was cut, benefits cut back, and pension was removed. Focus turned to "doing more with less". Old-tenure employees, now called associates were terminated without notice. Family culture dissolved. Sweatshop mentality. Current employees I remain in contact with state "nothing has changed."

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management more concerned with "putting on a happy face" to the public and subordinates than actually putting in the time to make meaningful changes that can have a great impact on employee morale and production. Was a great firm, now not so much so.

Poor management - especially the CIO. Lousy planning. Bad decision making.

    Pros

Great for time off. The environment is controlled chaos at best.

    Cons

Some middle managers and directors can't be trusted. They have really lousy people skills. Due to the general incompetence of the management, the company has no choice but to pass on the costs that result from their bad business decisions to the customers in the form of higher rates and reduced benefits. The cost of healthcare lies not with the doctors or the hospitals, but with poorly run organizations such as this. The result of their bad decisions and lack of vision harms the healthcare industry and ultimately it is the American public that suffers for it. They are really lousy at Information Technology. They have no idea how to evaluate it, align it with strategic goals and roll it out with a minimal impact to the company. They really need to invest in and retain top talent. What little top talent they have, is over worked and undervalued. Many more have left. What's left, well....

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the CIO to start. How the hell she still has her job is beyond me. Actually buy software that works and meets the needs of the business now and going far into the future. Many processes were created with chicken wire and bubble gum and don't pass the truck test. If management were as concerned with improving the efficiency of the company through more efficient processes and better software, as they are with wether or not you exercised today, then the cost of healthcare wouldn't be so bad. While it has been some time since I left, I understand from reliable sources that the situation has continued to slide even further into the toilet. Get it together Cropp.
