I worked at Indiana State University

    Pros

Typically paid higher than other jobs in Terre Haute
    Manageable hours while in school

    Cons

Can only work up to 28 hours, and you need permission to do that.
Seems they don't always hire the best qualified person

I have been working at Indiana State University

    Pros

I loved the students, the benefits and the pay.

    Cons

My department was more like a high school dance committee than an institution of higher learning. Everyone, save for two or three other faculty members, were very catty and back stabbing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't just agree with department heads when evidence shows they are in the wrong. Make sure you are using case by case examination instead of blanket decisions. These are people's lives, for Christ sake.

I have been working at Indiana State University full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

This company offers decent medical / prescription benefits, the scheduling can be flexible to accommodate for family life, and the co-workers are great (usually a great office culture).

    Cons

The application process for getting hired can be kind of lengthy - 4 months passed between applying for the position and my start date. Also, office culture can between very tense when overbooked for events.

Overall a good place to work for faculty and administrators; however, staff are grossly underpaid.

I have been working at Indiana State University full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

ISU is a good place to work if you stand up for what is right on behalf of students, faculty and staff. You will occasionally have dishonest and/or disgruntled, negative people to deal with at all levels, but this is true in any institution.

    Cons

Please see above for cons; in addition, workload is sometimes too high for faculty when you are attempting to contribute in the teaching, research and service.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Dedicated micromanagers, including the President; need to back off and allow for more creativity among employees.

I worked at Indiana State University full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Academic freedom and outstanding research opportunities

    Cons

The work load was significant but at the same time rewarding

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider the day to day details and responsibilities of the faculty to the students themselves. Grant writing is time consuming.
