    Pros

    great staff....hard workers.but often don't stay long

    Cons

staff have been depleted by the strict staffing rules.they staff according to number not accuity
    today I have 8 patients...impossible, unsafe
Management does not care about the need of the staff or have no power to change the culture for the better..it is ruled by the MBA's and not by healthcare professionals

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

LISTEN TO THE MEDICAL AND NURSING STAFF..ACTUALLY MAKE DECISIONS FOR THE SAFETY OF PATIENTS NOT FOR THE PROFIT MARGIN

    Pros

Co-workers are the best. Staff wants to give good care. I have a lot of PTO but little time to us it.

    Cons

Staffing is difficult. Managing 6 patients is hard on a good day especially with all of the documentation that is required. Staffing ratios are not realistic for the acuity of patients now vs 30 years ago. Senior management is not to be trusted.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend time with the staff on the front lines, not just 5 minutes. Spend a 12 hour day with the nurses and techs. See what they have to deal with on a daily basis. You might appreciate the complaints you see and hear on a daily basis.

    Pros

Staff are committed to providing excellence in patient care delivery and being knowledgeable regarding latest treatment and procedure and treatment modalities. Recognized nationally for various medical specialities.

    Cons

Punitive work environment for failure to meet desired metrics, communication between corporate and senior leadership and middle management and staff guarded with little transparency, lack of trust throughout the organization. Pay and benefits mid range with no increase in salary for senior staff. Professional education available however limited funding for external professional education and or education towards the advanced degrees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change the thought process that poor middle management leadership is the cause of negative outcomes be it staff satisfaction or patient care outcomes.
Don't expect positive work environments when staff feel all resources have been stripped away and that articulating any information perceived as negative will result in a job loss.

    Pros

The hours are flexible. You do get lengthy training. The hospital acknowledge staff every so often and are making small efforts to improve.

    Cons

Like with any big corporation your ideas are not always listened to.
If you get hurt on the job, you have to fend for yourself, even if it was caused by a patient. The hospital does NOT have your back.
    Job security is not guaranteed.
For staff who are not RNs it's hard to move up (salary wise), although there is a salary range for every job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

All management including CEOS should come out onto the floors on both the day and night shifts when the hospital is at high census and see how the staff handle situations. Stop looking at numbers and pointing blame. People are leaving or have left because of dangerous situations we're sometimes put in.

    Pros

Interesting Surgeries, fast paced environment, great networking

    Cons

Language barrier with some co workers. Some employees simply do not care and will dump work on others.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Select the responsible workers and make them supervisors. Problems are not handled fast enough and it allows the poor workers with bad attitudes to kill morale.

    Pros

Great co-workers--at least in the Cardiac division
Willing to spend money on medical technology
Decent non-financial benefits such as vacation time and time off for bereavement

    Cons

Bottom-line thinking is the driving force now. It used to be a great place to work at, but money is now their focus.
Executive level managers are making bad short term decisions that will have long term impacts on reimbursements.
Protected bedside nursing staff in the last layoff at the expense of their support people.
Productivity is compared to non-teaching hospitals
Wages for long term employees have been frozen for years
"Bonus" pay is tied to results staff have little control over

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust your employees more. Be honest with them about the health system's financial position.
You've frozen pay (in practice) for long term employees under the guise that you would be changing to a performance based system. However, it appears to long term employees like you are trying to get rid of them to save money.
Spend some money on unit level fun activities. There used to be a budget that allowed managers to spend money on employees--such as a holiday party, or gifts or buying lunch several times throughout the year.

    Pros

Most managers and employees really welcome the variety of resources that HR can provide them. The hospital tries to do the right thing by providing and documenting the training that they are required to have. Lots of opportunities for training and career progression in many clinical and non-clinical careers.

    Cons

Toward the end of my 8-10 year career in Human Resources with Inova Fairfax Hospital I was burned out. I think that combined with turnover in HR staff and leadership - the end of this adventure was inevitable in a way. I think the managers/clients that I supported had too much to juggle and in many cases were just trying to keep their heads above water. However, there were some in Senior Leadership that were just not very nice people and I think used fear to wield power because that's what short sighted, big mouth, nasty people do to try to get things done. No bitterness here...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a look in the mirror and do some major soul searching! Bad karma usually comes around to bite you in the butt so keep a look out because it's going to catch up with you.

    Pros

    convenience of facility, medical staff

    Cons

Nursing management was terrible. Too much "micromanaging" on small things yet larger issues go unaddressed. Punitive type atmosphere. You would show up to work and a co-worker was not there anymore, no word or acknowledgement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on patient care rather than nit picking staff, very passive-aggressive.

    Pros

I've been working here for over 2 years now. We have great co-workers and good benefits.

    Cons

Always under-staffed. Low pay. Very hard to take vacations when you want to. Under appreciated staff. Too much expectation with less resources. Staff is always overworked. Not much flexibility with scheduling.
