I have been working at Inova full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Inova for all of it's many cons does have flexible work schedules, great coworkers, and an array of career paths. This includes both clinical and research based careers.

    Cons

In my opinion the cons outweigh the positives. Very poor treatment of employees who are not MD staff, terrible benefits, understaffed and over worked, limited room for advancement within the organization, as well as being well known for underpaying employees. Many of these cons exist because they are simply the largest hospital system within Northern Virginia, which gives employees limited options.

    Advice to Management

While all organizations must watch their bottom line, the management mentality at Inova has been one of an organization about to file bankruptcy, while Inova openly admits millions in surplus funds and purchasing the Exon campus. Employees have been overworked, and undervalued. When positions have gone unfilled and staff are expected to fill in, errors have occurred and will continue to happen all while the staff grow ever increasingly resentful of the treatment they receive. Patient care should be the main priority, and this needs to become the focus as it was when I first started with Inova.

I worked at Inova (More than 5 years)

    Cons

none, at least not for me

    Advice to Management

Bad staffing practices Not always supported when conflicts arise with MDs Put on a facade of listening to nurses but nothing seemed to change

    Advice to Management

Stop investing in buildings and start investing in people

I have been working at Inova full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Offer room to grow. Transfer within the system to areas you like.

    Cons

I wouldn't considered this a "con" but Inova is THE health system in Northern Virginia. If you don't like them, working in a hospital as nurse in NoVa, might be challenging.

    Advice to Management

Since transferring to my current position, I have actually saw the CEO of this OU a few times, its nice!

I worked at Inova full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Worked on medical floor. Working with the other clinical personnel was great. Great teamwork. Everyone had your back.

    Cons

Constant management changes. Understaffing of nurses and clinical technicians. Poor coordination between departments means that you have to get someone to keep calling to get something done.

    Advice to Management

Need more opportunities for clinical support personnel to advance.

    Pros

Great organization as a structure. It's written values mission and goals are inspiring. There is an opportunity for greatness but may not be reached.

    Cons

Poor leadership....claim they want to be the best in the world, but this doesn't apply to behavioral health. Need to review how they invest in employees has one of the highest employee turnover rate and has few women and minorities in Senior Leadership.

    Advice to Management

Go back to your core values.... Be... Know.... Do

    I worked at Inova full-time

    Pros

Good benefits, competitive salary compared to other health systems, and reputable place to work. This is a good place to work if you are satisfied with the status quo, prefer equal redistribution regardless of performance, and stability-- basically fans of the federal workforce will love it here.

    Cons

If you are a high performer, you may be frustrated here. HR runs the organization similar to a government entity. Performance based compensation structures are lacking and recognition of accomplishments are dispersed, rather than focused. The 80-20 rule applies in many instances where 80% of the work is being done by 20% yet compensation and bonuses are equally distributed and recognition is dispersed as well. If you're a socialist at heart that is satisfied just coming home each week with a paycheck and not doing anything to improve yourself while still receiving bonuses, this is the place for you.

    Advice to Management

Compensation needs to be aligned with how the healthcare industry is changing. If healthcare is to be performance based, so does the compensation structure for the staff that is making it happen. Change agent cannot be someone with decades of experience in an industry where anyone would agree is a disaster. Look outside of healthcare and reward performance vs. seniority.
