    I have been working at Insurance Australia Group full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    Competitive salary, strong unions, plenty of benefits if you're contract is longer than 1 year (Claims consultants aren't eligible until their contract is extended), supportive environment, good work culture, excellent training. Offers a great work/lifestyle balance.

    Cons

    Policy wordings are interpreted differently by senior staff, often senior consultants will contradict each other or be unaware of new processes. There is debate about who is responsible for what among the departments, quite often dealing with other departments can be frustrating as we all use different systems and have different information available. While their is plenty of inter-company opportunities, it seemed difficult for people to receive promotions within the department. Initially when you start working there you will be placed on "high priority" calls, meaning you will always end up working late; this will stop once you move onto normal call priority.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    There should be uniformity of the interpretation of policy wordings and processes; senior consultants should offer consistent advice. Similarly it is easy for senior consultants to become lazy, IAG should take more care with the selection of their senior consultants as they are highly influential in the claims department.

    Pros

    relaxed environment, good work/life balance, you can go home on time most of the time, most people here are nice, although you know there are difficult people everywhere,supportive for further education.

    Cons

    some team might not be very effective, so you have to wait for a long time for them to response although you've chased them again and again. Some managers are paying more attention on their family rather than the work here.

    Pros

    - good chance to grow into leadership positions if you like politics
    - you have a lot of spare time that you can use for personal development

    Cons

    - legacy code written by less qualified programmers
    - insurance business in NZ grows by acquisition, there are 100s of insurance related software products that require support and integration
    - everything moves very slow, you may get used to that and it will numb your brain
    - SCRUM is used as an excuse to keep too many developers busy with something

    Great leaders who get the best out of people, a focus on getting the culture right.

    Cons

    Not much movement at the top so advancement opportunities are rare, and often filled by sideways moves by people whose skills are sometimes not appropriate for them

    Pros

    Collegiate culture, good remuneration & benefits, very secure. Excellent work-life balance, very family friendly.

    Cons

    Only career path is into people management, not much technical leadership. Frequent restructures. One-way communication. You need to have a good relationship with your direct manager, and also that manager needs to be very effective when it comes to negotiation with their superiors.

    Friendly staff and Management. Adequate training and opportunities to further skills. Team Playing environment, and corporate wardrobe.

    Cons

    Inflexibility with changing hours to a more suitable time. It was a good experience, but work-life balance could have been better

    It's a big company and I suppose IT is still seen as a cost centre by a lot of older folks in the company. In reality, if it wasn't for IT, there wouldn't be a company.

    Pros

    There is genuine desire to 'be better' rather than just accepting status-quo. Quite a large number of initiatives (for the business and for the staff) that could help, if completed. Large numbers of pleasant, friendly, professional staff.

    Cons

    Generally un-inspiring individuals in leadership positions. Many of the initiatives (see 'pros') fall by the wayside or become lip-service. Insurance is never going to be a glamourous industry.

    What you *say* you're going to do is good; now do it !
