Very busy but a great learning experience

Senior Engineer (Former Employee)
Phoenix, AZ

I worked at Intel Corporation

ProsDue to it's size, great exposure to the semicon industry supply chains. There are many alternative jobs within Intel that you can apply to as well after you spend a couple of years in your old one.

ConsVery long hours for some groups or people, making it hard to have work-life balance. The annual performance review is tedious and does not really reward any risk taking.

One of the best run companies I've worked for

Manager (Current Employee)
Washington, DC

I have been working at Intel Corporation

ProsCEO and senior leadership team are excellent with good vision. Good compensation and benefits but make your best deal going in. Comp levels are rarely addressed for changes in market place.

ConsManagement team below senior levels needs development. Legacy issues keep the company from being as agressive as it could be.

An excellent place to work

Staff Hardware Engineer (Former Employee)
San Jose, CA

I worked at Intel Corporation

ProsMeritocracy is not just a buzz word, people live by it. The company rewards employees who perform and encourages people to work together towards a common set of goals.

ConsLike most large companies, it is easy to get lost in the shuffle. Certain organizations can be very political as well.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement is doing a great job of manufacturing and delivering innovative products. If only the stock price reflected the company's performance.

Great Place to Work

Physical Design Engineer (Current Employee)
Portland, OR

I have been working at Intel Corporation

ProsYou get to work with lots of smart people of many different nationalities. The salary is decent and there quite a few recent college graduates within the company.

ConsThere is high stress, the review process is not transparent, and the work environment is mundane sitting in a cube all day.

Great place to work for low to mid experience

Hardware Engineer (Current Employee)
Austin, TX

I have been working at Intel Corporation

ProsGreat Perks
Good flexibility for taking off
Great Benefits
They bend over backward to keep you comfortable in your job
Quarterly trips, both by the individual team and the whole site
Great management from top to bottom - they try to keep you informed as they can

ConsIntel Austin has a recipe for doing things, and it mostly involves using low tech and compensating using large amount of people/resources to compensate.
If you are a new hire or low experienced, this shouldn't matter because you need to learn the ropes anyways
If you are a high experienced person, it will be difficult to acclimate to the brute force way of doing things.
If you are a person who likes to have control or some input of how things are done, I would not recommend Intel Austin as a place to work. There may be some other sites where this may not apply.
Changing things may not be possible because the majority of the methodologies are not created in the Austin area.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you wish to retain the best and brightest, you will have to have to allow some kind way for them to contribute to the methods that are being applied to them.
If you are not interested in doing that, I would recommend sticking to hiring college grads and low experienced people. It would allow austin to keep the current methodology going.

If you are single or without kids, it can be a great place to work

Embedded Segment Marketing Manager (Former Employee)
Chandler, AZ

I worked at Intel Corporation

ProsChallenging work assignments
Talented co-workers (very intelligent people for the most part)
Decent pay
Good health benefits
Some flexibility in work location (ie work-from-home)

ConsOptions for promotion - very limited
Raises - minimal at best (2%)
LONG hours 60-80/week
Limited recognition for a job well done, but always feedback on what was wrong or could be improved

Advice to Senior ManagementRethink focal. Forced distribution means that for one to get a promotion that another gets a poor review. The 2% (average raise) for three years in a row stunk. Pay for the performance.

A love/hate relationship

Communications Manager (Former Employee)
Riverton, UT

I worked at Intel Corporation

ProsGood pay
Good benefits
Excellent work/life balance
Had some great managers
Great development programs
Excellent support while I was working on a master's degree
Some really great people

ConsToo many chiefs, not enough Indians. There were some efforts to reduce layers of management, but they didn't really stick. I worked at a small site and a lot of the corporate culture didn't make it to our location.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to share the vision of where the company is going with employees. Reorganize a little less...let departments and teams really get the hang of working together for a while before you "reorg again".

Good place to work

Compensation Analyst (Former Employee)
Hillsboro, OR

I worked at Intel Corporation

ProsI really liked the way company treated employees. The perks of working for Intel were great, and I think that it's a nice place to be in many stages of your career.

ConsSlow, bureaucratic. Not all of the people working there are super bright as you would find at other tech companies. The HR Organization is not very strategic.
