Good learning, good people, unhealthy environment

Human Resources Manager (Former Employee) Folsom, CA

ProsEverything has a process, Intel University, smart people there who will mentor you, fast-paced and challenging. Used to be a metric driven company

ConsEverything has a process... one of my peers told me 'Intel is where fun goes to die.' I would add... 'and where creativity goes to die.' A student once told me 'why would I work at Intel- it's just a bunch of type A people pissing on each other all day.' Pretty accurate. The culture actually draws out the absolute the worst type A behaviors in people there but of course, it is accepted since the hope is it also draws out the best type A behaviors- long hours, internal competition and confrontation on every little thing

Advice to Senior ManagementI am glad you have an engineering CEO again. Get back to metric driven decision making. Dont make it so managers have to break/undo something and put it back together to get a good review. Promote people there with high EQ and humanity so everyone doesnt just feel like some widget in a process. Remove RIsk Taking from your values. You know it iisnt true. Everyone there is absolutely terrified to take any risk in case it should fail in any way. The one phrase I heard there most was- fly below the radar and move internally to a new position every year, if possible. Figure out how to reward the good type A behaviors but severely punish the bad type A behaviors

Advice to Senior Managementstop tracking every minute for temps, it stirs anger

Learnt a lot under good work conditions as an Intern

Graduate Intern Technical (Former Employee) Folsom, CA

ProsPeople you work with are as smart as you or better than you. You can only learn more about so many things that Intel are into. Good experience for an intern. Good work culture if not as fun or dynamic as say Google or FB.

ConsSome teams like the team I worked for, does not really know how to handle an Intern. Some Manager can be ruthless. Mine did not think of things that may be good for my career but instead chose to get as much work done as possible from me. A little too result oriented

Advice to Senior ManagementDifferent managers work differently .Nothing can be generalized

Great people; work was interesting if you're a computer architecture person

Graphics Validation Engineer (Former Employee) Folsom, CA

ProsFree fruit; interesting people. Work is bleeding-edge (so you might be working on problems never solved before).

ConsSome employees are not plugged into the company. The negativity of some employees definitely bring down the Intel experience.

Advice to Senior ManagementFlat structure is important (though some employees seem to ride on the backs of their subordianates)

Great opportunities across various business groups and functions

Program Manager (Current Employee) Folsom, CA

ProsWell organized processes for dealing with various tasks. Great technical experts to work with. Opportunities available to change groups or job types and support education to develop employees.

ConsToo big to move quickly. Some org structures and beliefs are still relevant to CPU centric biz in late 90s or early 00s. Because of too many orgs across the world, the work life balance could suffer.

Advice to Senior ManagementHave to create better programs to encourage risk taking at individual level and question the status quo.
