    Pros

Satisfaction of working for the global leader in its industry, and being well compensated for it. Opportunity to work with talented, motivated colleagues and peers in a global organization. Working on challenging issues that provide an opportunity to grow professionally, with the resources needed to meet those challenges.

    Cons

Dealing with the occaisional bureaucratic processes necessary at a large multi-national company. Difficulty of advancing at the higher job grade levels, as competition is high and increases as one advances. Finally, the pervasive attitude that an engineer without marketing experience can be put in a senior marketing position and be successful, while the opposite consideration of putting a marketing person in an engineering job would never happen

    Advice to Management

Look at trimming some of the prodcut division staff, just as was done with the marketing staff. more is not necessarily better.

    Pros

Based on my three months at Intel Research Santa Clara, they are very flexible with respect to where and how you get your work done. They are open to telecommuting and working from home when necessary. They have good health benefits even for interns.

    Cons

Intel is a large company, and with it come some of the normal downfalls such as red tape.

    Advice to Management

I didn't interact wit senior management as an intern so I don't have any feedback for senior management.

    Pros

Intel provides excellent opportunities for learning at the cutting edge of technology. Most of the time you will experience a good balance between competition and teamwork with other employees. Though management sets high standards for achievement, "Intel culture" helps you find your way through the competitive environment with workshops and useful negotiating skills.

    Cons

Working at Intel can be stressful at times, and some groups are brutally competitive.

    Advice to Management

Be more flexible in eligibility for benefits. Over the years, these things have become thoroughly bureaucratized at Intel. My own experience was that I had to forgo retirement benefits on a technicality, though I spent most of my career working for Intel.

    Pros

There are lots of interesting problems to work on and someone who wants to develop new tools can work closely with many users. The library resources are very extensive and helpful in my research. It is exciting to work with the newest technology and help in developing tools that only a small number of people in the world get to work with.

    Cons

There is a lot of bureaucracy and there are a lot of silly training classes to take. It can be difficult to find others in the company who do similar work to yours (for example to find collaborators). The competitive environment can make it difficult to start collaborations.

    Advice to Management

Make it easier to create shared research resources.

    Pros

Challenging and state of the art technology leader.

    Cons

Sometimes overworked and not enough feedback about performance on a regular basis versus annual.

    Advice to Management

Keep everyone informed about longer term strategic direction changes.

    Pros

Lots of opportunities - large global company covering many businesses. Market leader and direction setter for the industry. Relatively easy to move around internally. Despite the size of the company, they are reasonably open with communication to the employees. Competitive salary and benefits.

    Cons

Large and bureaucratic. Some are frustrated by ranking & rating process, but I found it to be a reasonably fair system. Depending on the organization, technical ability is sometimes the reason for promotion to management and this can breed some poor people managers that continue to succeed because of their technical skills.

    Advice to Management

Find way to succeed outside of microprocessors.
