    I have been working at Intellectual Ventures


    I completely agree with the 1st post about IV. There are many, many extremely sharp-minded folks at this company. From the first moment I arrive, I have never ceased to be impressed by the intellectual calibre of my coworkers, not to mention higher levels of management. Even those with skimpy experience in IP are very deep in technical, legal and business fields. You learn a lot, just by working with the best and brightest; there are a lot of opportunities for growth and career expansion, and you are constantly challenged to stay current - in every way. Since the hiring our President, there have been many good changes in terms of cutting waste, creating better lines of communication, and building a better, more rational organization.


    With all of the high IQ, though, comes not only the ego, and strong opinions, but also the politics, nepotism, politics, and generally childish behavior. In the past, you had a lot of very smart people who had little to no supervision or governance running very important segments of business, with little to no results, while freely spending a ton of money. As the company has grown, it has tried to overcome these issues, by implementing more practices that are aligned with other industries, and weeding out the people who either do not contribute (but continue to reap the benefits of a cushy job) or creating circumstances that are uncomfortable enough to cause them to leave on their own (accountability?! oversight?! BUDGET?! ridiculous!). Communication is another huge area for improvement - there is little to none. All of the groups work like silos, and it's like moving heaven and earth to try to form regular lines of communication and be transparent to each other. As a result there is a lot of wasted resources in doing things over and over because sharing information within the company is so difficult. With that said, this is also improving over time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    You are the right track. Hiring the current President was a great move - she's done the company a lot of good. You need to continue to weed out the slackers collecting large paychecks and do NOTHING but waste the company's resources and create poor morale within the company.
