I worked at Intelligent Mechatronic Systems full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    - Worked for a very friendly and engaging team, worked on many interesting projects.
    - Generally good work/life balance; salary okay.
    - Culture very dependent on team.

    Cons

    - Often projects would be handed down last minute with very little time left to create a quality product. Worked on weekends occasionally, sometimes worked multiple weekends in a row.
    - Senior management would layout the blame in all-hands meetings, cite employees not working hard enough. Blames tech employees for sales numbers; not appropriate for Holiday all-hands, most teams worked very hard.
    - High turnover rates.
    - Little opportunity for advancement due to negative nature of management.
    - Culture very dependent on team.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give your employees the resources to succeed. Don't try to pass the blame onto employees at every opportunity. Do better at screening employees for fit and offer more compensation to attract better candidates if you'd like more productive employees. Approve of CEO despite management failures. Try to find senior management interested in helping the workforce, instead of driving them to leave.

I have been working at Intelligent Mechatronic Systems full-time

    Pros

    - Great team spirit - very supportive and helpful
    - Lots of opportunity to work on different parts of systems, delivering real features
    - There is a lot of interesting technologies being worked on - even if you aren't working on it you are able to learn about it

    Cons

    - non perfect processes around the SDLC - effort is expended towards improvements, but progress is slower than I would hope for.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    keep focus on priorities

I have been working at Intelligent Mechatronic Systems full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

They heat their office in the winter time, and the facility is cleaned fairly often. The parking lot is sufficient.

    Cons

Executives and management are more focused on research projects than monetization strategies. This is to be expected considering most are phD's, which is indicative of a lack of common sense. The result is felt over and over again as the company continually deals with financial woes and instability.

Salaries are generally low / non-competitive.

Hubris of the technical staff, and lack of focus on quality assurance.

    Nepotism.

    Blatant discrimination.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go work for a university instead of trying to run a business.

    Pros

If you get it done, there is much flexibility. People are great to work with. People are smart and professional. Workplace is fun and deliverables happen.

    Cons

Usual software construction challenges, such as scope creep during releases. Pros outweigh the cons, though.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Scope releases better.

    Pros

Overwhelmingly good people to work with and a company poised for success. The opportunities for IMS are really starting to take off and you can feel the momentum inside the company. The UBI line of business is maturing with lots of recent wins while the new Fleet product really seems to have legs. I don't think any other company in this space has as complete a vision for the connected car.

    Cons

The company has its challenges, but what company doesn't? Recent key hires (senior managers and product managers) make me very optimistic about the future.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on doing a few things very well.

    Pros

pay was fair in my case
    fair work/life balance
managers are nice to their men
    R&D style of working

    Cons

People in charge don't really know what their men can do or can't do.
Most decisions are made secretly and 100% nonstransparently by very small circle of people. Unfortunately, a lot of those decisions are wrong.
Big decisions are made by business men who is naive about the development trend of telemetrics technology, products and potential applications. This has led to fatal failure of certain projects.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When decision makers don't really know what to do, ask tech people. Don't just outsource your work and lay off engineers who really can make things right.

    Pros

Most of the engineers working at IMS are incredibly intelligent and passionate people. Tthe work can be incredibly interesting, IMS has some interesting projects in the pipeline

    Cons

Management doesn't know when to say no to features, stupid client requests or when to kill projects that are a huge waste of time and money.

Projects are frequently understaffed and the amount of red tape necessary to get anything done at IMS is ridiculous for a "small-mid size company". IMS likes to thing of itself as a heavyweight and non-negotiable contracts (think Apple Developer Contract) will end up tied up with legal for months/years...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a good look at what is feasible when you are a small-mid size company and focus on doing one thing very well, as opposed to shipping with a million half baked features.
