ISS was a good place to work for many years.

Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee) Colorado Springs, CO

ProsGood salary and benefits. Plenty of opportunity for personal growth. At one time there were opportunities to deploy overseas.

ConsSometimes efforts lacked good requirements development and were planned on the fly. The company has had recent layoffs.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe careful about controlling growth. Also, expand your markets from GOTS work to include work for commercial clients as well for diversity.

Did not transition well from small to medium size. Misjudged military funding climate. Untrained management.

Software Engineer III (Former Employee) Colorado Springs, CO

ProsGreat ability to experiment in your technical and management skills. There are some great people who really believe in what they do and wish to be more, they just need managers who can empower them.

ConsUnclear vision and strategy. Lack of governance across all projects and technologies. Lack of reusing ideas, code, and expertise across programs. Too much in-fighting.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou are the only hope for the company. Too many mid level managers and some directors waste resources. Learn to excel at several few things and dominate a market. Everything else is wasting time and energy.

    Good company, contracting hurts.

Software Engineer III (Current Employee) Colorado Springs, CO

ProsMgmt seems to care about the employees. They offer many benefits. The work week is flexible if coordinated with your manager and very family centric.

ConsContracts having funding in limbo can hurt this company with layoffs being the result. Overall they try to plan for these events but it is not always successful. The threat of loss of job is sometimes unnerving.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to leverage what people already have discovered. No need to completely reinvent the wheel if the current wheel just needs a new tire.

Company grew too big, too fast for the in place management to handle effectively.

Requirements Analyst (Former Employee) Colorado Springs, CO

ProsMiddle management keeps this company afloat, TONS of great people work here. Pay's pretty well, but the benefits are amazing.

ConsUpper management is completely out of touch with goals, timelines, personnel, and their own products.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet a clue of the people you have working for you, there is some exceptional talent being wasted, while there is also a lot of fat to be trimmed. You have a leadership vacuum problem that if not corrected soon will continue to have adverse effects on the companies long term future.

Turning into another gigantic government contracting behemoth

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Colorado Springs, CO

    ProsGREAT people....great, great, great engineers.

ConsHeavy management structure. Power struggles starting to affect the "worker bees" negatively. Projects started, ramped up, mismanaged and thrown away on a whim. Technologies changed on a dime for no apparent reason. This was a great company that was doing nothing but going up until recent management moves starting dragging it down.

Advice to Senior ManagementLeads either know their stuff or they don't. Some are passionate engineering minds with the people skills that have built cohesive teams willing to do anything to achieve the collective goal. Others are just jerks that nobody wants to be anywhere near. Please stop promoting the latter.

Not a great place to work

Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee) Colorado Springs, CO

ProsGood benefits if you can keep your job. Some of the technical people are very good.

ConsConstant layoffs. Upper management "good old boys club" has virtually no experience running a large business. Incompetent product management - very process heavy but poorly defined requirements force engineers to be either idle or angry. Promotions are all buddy system. Core technology is extremely dated.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider sale of the company to a larger organization with the competence to run large projects

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Colorado Springs, CO

ProsBranching out to the commercial sector and law enforcement looks very promising.

Fun to watch them grow rapidly from Small to Large...no longer growing, but still good.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Colorado Springs, CO

ProsSmall company attitude toward their people, casual, friendly, challenging, extremely bright techies.

ConsHaving difficulty with transitiion to Large Business in the midst of Sequester and reduced Defense funding.
