    I have been working at InterDigital full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Compensation is on par with industry for engineers and IT, however the KOP location is rather remote from any activities or a city.

    Cons

    Entrenched in outdated processes, The Board and CEO trying to sell the company. Department projects and goals rarely met which affected your bonus - when they didn't cut it at the year's end. No yearly bonus if you leave before 12-31. KOP location is rather remote and all major access roads have heavy traffic during peak times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Stop trying to sell the company so The Board and CEO can have a payday, and get back to letting the engineers be innovative. Prorate bonuses when someone leaves of their own accord.

    Pros

    Excellent pay and benefits coupled with a good work life balance. The engineering staff is highly skilled and includes some brilliant people.

    Cons

    Layoffs and other RIFs are too common - occurring roughly every 2 to 3 years. InterDigital moves from one technology to the next every few years and in doing so, replaces existing workers with new hires who are up to speed on the new areas.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Stick with your technology programs for longer periods instead of pulling the plug prematurely. Give greater say in executive decisions to technical experts instead of relying on patent lawyers.

    Pros

    Excellent pay and benefits combined with a work environment in which it is easy to attain a good work/life balance. The engineering workforce is very talented and the company is involved in some exciting wireless R&D projects.

    Cons

    Job security is poor - layoffs occur every frequently because the company hires people for new projects which are then abandoned within 2-3 years. Middle managers are more concerned with maintaining their place in the food chain rather than doing what's good for the company as a whole.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    A thorough housecleaning is in order. The CEO and board of directors need to be replaced with people who actually understand the wireless industry.

    Pros

    Most co-workers are great; a few are dead weight.
    Reasonable pay
    Flexible working arrangements (although this is getting more restrictive now)
    First-level management mostly cares about their people (that's changing too)

    Cons

    Poor work-life balance (company doesn't care if it works you to death)
    Upper management has no regard or respect from employees
    Typical political correctness from HR, but it's all a smoke-screen to hide lack of employee regard
    Poor employee morale due to management practices
    Declining level of benefits, at ever higher prices
    Company is not an innovator; just follows the market and focus is on low price, not quality

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Realize that the company's success is due to the hard work and creativity of your employees, NOT your tired and worn-out strategies and me-too policies. If you want the company to turn around, stop focusing solely on costs and start treating your people like the professionals they are; support them and encourage innovation and create an environment where the morale can improve

    Pros

    One of the pros with InterDigital is the opportunity that people get to work on latest technologies. There is lot of freedom to move from one area of work to another within the company.

    Cons

    There is no concept of work-life balance for people working in the product teams. Working for 6 days a week with really long hours each day is quite common. These crunch times lasted up to one to two years instead of a few weeks/months which is the norm in many technology companies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    InterDigital started product development, hired a team and laid of people and repeated this process three times in the last 9 years. It should put more thought into what it wants to do in the product space before actually hiring the people and bring in people with product experience into the exec team. It is completely reliant on patents that are either silly or are good but about to expire for all the revenue and this can not be the long term plan of the company.

    Small Company. Nice compensation. Flexible work hours

    Cons

    Growth prospects nil. No recognition to small fish. Full of Directors/VPs
    Executive management lacks direction and leadership

    Empowered to improve processes, implement new concepts, take leadership roles, develop ideas. Pleasant working environment, associates friendly.

    Cons

    Professional accomplishments unrecognized/not rewarded. Lacks a productive employee career plan. Work-life balance enjoyed, but many are not permitted same benefit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Provide a career development tool for all employees and implement to ensure professional growth AND advancement. Provide a material rewards program to all employees. Recognize and value all employees (in addition to engineers, attorneys and senior management) within the organization to improve morale and productivity.

    Pros

    Creative work environment. You are encouraged to do research and produce your own ideas. Competitive salary and benefits. Staff is mostly friendly.

    Cons

    You have to work in suburbs. Even though these days almost all the tech companies located in the suburbs. But if you are single person who would like to have a life outside of the work, it is very difficult to have a balanced life.

    Work on cutting-edge wireless
    Job security for authors/co-authors of numerous patent applications
    Mostly good people to work with
    Relaxed working environment (typically no product deadlines)

    Cons

    Hard to advance past Member Technical Staff for engineers
    Has a reputation as a patent troll
    Limited transparency of executive decision making down to employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Continue to drive the business through engineering innovation instead of purely patent driven decisions. Good engineering will always create value in some form.
