I worked at International Flavors & Fragrances full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Pay scale and benefits were great. Fellow employees felt like family. The location I was at was definitely a team environment where every one had input into the overall outcome of production.

    Cons

I had opportunities for some advancement but it was definitely limited. Early in my tenure at this company, training was a big deal. As time moved forward that became less and less until it was only a very minor % that received any training.

I worked at International Flavors & Fragrances as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Wide variety of interesting work opportunities that had a positive long term impact. The work I did here definitely helped me with having things to discuss in interviews later on. Also had lots of hands on experience with excel and SAP.

    Cons

There was a lot of downtime between projects. While my projects all had an impact, there would also be days with nothing to do, but read.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cross functional use of the co-ops seemed to work well for everyone. I suggest encouraging more of that.

I worked at International Flavors & Fragrances full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

IFF brought the new concepts of cell-based assay to taste modulation compound screening, and created a lot of new modulators for sweet, umami and bitter taste qualities.

    Cons

Creation of taste receptor cell lines and evaluation was the biggest challenge since all sweet and umami receptors with at least two subunits and a G-protein, so it was hard to create a cell line with good response in taste assay, especially in HTS evaluation. I tried different vectors, different vector combinations, and three gene in separate vectors or three genes in one vector, finally I got some working stable cell lines. From this, I got a lot of experience in how to create a good stable cell lines and how to evaluate them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I am a self-motivation employee and like to get a big picture about any project of mine and its timeline. it is good to discuss any progress and problems with supervisor and colleagues, and to have lab meeting in regular time to follow the research progress in your working field.

Former Employee - Material Handler/Rcvg/Replenisher in Hazlet, NJ

I worked at International Flavors & Fragrances full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Very clean. Great co workers. Decent pay. In house gym. Good benefits. State of the art facility.

    Cons

Wrong people get managerial positions. Wrong changes to job made by people who don't know about it. Supervisors use fear and intimidation to get their employees in line. Voices aren't heard.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Kids straight from college get supervisor and manager roles who have no business getting them. IFF has mottos that "People are critical to IFF's future"- that could not be further from the truth. You can do one million things right but that one tiny mess up will get you fired. You are nothing at Hazlet IFF unless you know who to buddy up with.
