I worked at International Paper full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Company has a lot of good benefits and opportunity for growth as an employee.

    Cons

Working at the paper mills is still old school and if you are from the city you might not fit in will the people. Make sure you keep you personal business to yourself.

    Advice to Management

Don't participate in rumors set the example this applies to Team Leaders on first shift.

    Pros

IP is a large corporation so there are almost limitless resources available if you know where and how to ask. The IP pay scale is commensurate with other similar companies. There are some great people working at IP.

    Cons

Though the pay scale is commensurate with other companies, getting a promotion is usually very difficult. Like a lot of large companies where employees make good salaries, there is a lot of jealousy and envy amongst the employees about what each other is making. Who tells them? Instead of looking for very talented help and rewarding them for a job well done, they reward mediocrity with their sliding, bell curve based salary determination scale. If an employee has been doing excellent work for numerous years, they may get an increase in salary of up to 5%. (though it is usually between 0 & 1%, like .47% for example.) On the other hand, if an employee has been borderline at performing their job for most of their career, and they suddenly do their job, they get rewarded with the maximum 5% increase in salary! Where is the incentive for the high performers to keep producing? It's the proverbial story of the horse pulling the cart and the one tied to the back of the cart. The horse pulling the cart gets whipped if they suddenly let up, but the one following behind the cart doing nothing to help pull the cart, just keeps getting fed, watered and groomed!

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the ridiculous Merit pay scale! Start recognizing and rewarding the employees who are actually performing for you. Look in the trenches at the employees who steadily work day to day with no mistakes, no re-work, no problems and reward them. Look at the employees who you never have to say anything to about getting their work done and done right, instead of the squeaky wheel that always has problems but gets rewarded when they suddenly do a little! Promote your talent! Delegate and let your employees perform, and then reward them for their work! In the end, you will have more loyal and dedicated employees who will work to make you look better! They will be more cohesive and will not mind going the extra mile to perform a task or job better!

I worked at International Paper full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

International Paper is the largest paper company in the world; therefore they frequently lead and others follow them. They are not afraid of innovation. For example, I was tasked in 2005 with raising the brightness of commodity paper from 84 to 92 and CIE whiteness from 100 to 146. There is often room to grow in this company with its many paper mills and roles to support them. P.S. I worked at IP until October 31, 2009.

    Cons

As a very large company, there is a lot of bureaucracy to weed ones way through. Sometimes it seems that reports are required just for the sake of having the reports themselves. They did not frequently seem to drive the business objectives of the company.

    Advice to Management

Reduce the reporting requirements placed on employees. Rather, measure mill productivity and addition of new products as the best means of evaluating employee success.

I have been working at International Paper full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

It is a large company with many opportunities both domestically and worldwide. If you like to travel there are many jobs that require travel

    Cons

It is so large that you can become just another number. You really have to network and get to know many people to move around. Also, internal talent develop is needed, as not all managers know how to develop their people.

    Advice to Management

Overall it is good, but continue to improve. Do not get content and continue to work on developing the talent that is already in the company.

    Pros

Great place to work. I learned a lot of good skills in operation of DCS and related equipment. I worked in the Power house and was treated much better there than I was in the Converting area.

    Cons

When International Paper is done with a Plant they shut it down, just like they did my plant, and all the rest. It doesn't mater if the plant is productive or not. Don't waste your time at a paper plant, paper is on its way out, you will just be looking for a job when you are older, it was nice while it lasted but it didn't last long enough.

    Advice to Management

Converting area and paper machine area managers need to treat people like adults and not kids. Power area managers were good to work with.

    Pros

Company really cares about their employees and their families. Great opportunities coming out of college and being hired directly into IP. Great growth opportunities

    Cons

Some jobs travel more than others - if you want to travel you need to let management know that up front - but there are not always opportunities

    Advice to Management

    Continue to support employees

I have been working at International Paper full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

You get paid and the benefits sometimes work

    Cons

Salary management treats hourly employees like indentured servants. Managers who do not show up for work counsel hourly employees for attendance. Security cameras and various company policies are only used against select personnel.

    Advice to Management

    Replace all of management immediately

    Pros

Easy money for driving a forklift

    Cons

You get paid the same as the next guy, whether you've been there 20 years or 20 days...and even if you do your best and he does his worst...its the same.

    Advice to Management

Make the One on One reviews mean something. Give individual raises instead of the plant as a whole.
