Current Employee - Sales and Scheduling in Houston, TX

I have been working at Internet America full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The staff and teams are very friendly, laid back, and work well together. The environment is professional but casual. Call center can be busy but also has dead times.

    Cons

No raises. No professional development. No investment in employees. Upper management is capable but the CEO is very hands on and meddles with everything much to its demise. Management knows this but nobody can step up to him.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in your employees and you won't have to constantly bring in new entry level employees with high turnover.

I have been working at Internet America full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

benefits other than pay, casual dress code, coworkers are easy to get along with, very knowledgeable and helpful

    Cons

pay is not equal to the work that is being done nor the skills that you possess, equipment that needs to be repaired or replaced gets a temporary fix

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees when they advise you that there is a problem and work together to find a solution instead of belittling their ideas.

Former Employee - Wireless Internet Technician in San Antonio, TX
Former Employee - Wireless Internet Technician in San Antonio, TX

I worked at Internet America full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Relaxed dress as a technician, i.e. blue jeans and company polo. Paid mileage.

    Cons

Poor wireless infrastructure. IA bought out a lot of "mom and pop shops" who could no longer support the amount of customers which makes for long work hours troubleshooting problems or a "chasing your tail approach". Your truck and tools, neither are cheap especially if you loose either. Expected to climb towers with very little pay in return. Cell tower techs hit $85,000/yr on the low end, the company wants you to do it for your regular salary of $35,000yr. Poor benefits wipe out your pay if you have a family. The company tries to be a well structured corporation with no structure leaving you flying at the seat of your pants and leaves the employee totally responsible for circumstances out of their control or beyond their job duties.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ditch the large corporation act, fix current infrastructure problems before the next mom and pop shop buyout, listen to your employees who are out there doing the work. Try to keep your quality people, in your largest service area you've lost most of your aces due to poor management.

I have been working at Internet America full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

benefits are good and you get an hour for lunch

    Cons

This company loves to promote people to hold them accountable for others failures. The network is just a huge mess of acquisitions from other wireless companies who didn't want to spend the money to upgrade their own equipment. This combined with the constant stress of doing more with less has led to some animosity among the current employee's. With the rapid loss of employee's the current subscriber base (aka IA customers) are suffering to no end.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This company needs strong leadership but unfortunately those people left the company. Paying below industry standards gets what you what you pay for. You should really consider treating your current employee's better. Failure to notify customer service for issues we should be aware of when customers call, is something i'd expect from a large company, not one with 50+ employee's. Which most work in the same office 20 feet from a managers office door.
