Pros
1) Fabulous work life balance. Unlike some other bay area sweat shops (consumer electronic firms, etc) Intuit respects employee work life balance. You can work from home on any day of the week, take time off, etc. The lights in most buildings go off at 6: 00 pm. indicative of a healthy balance of work and personal life.
2) Great compensation. For the same compensation structure, you would have to jump 2-3 levels at other firms. A classic example is that Snr. PMs at Intuit usually make the same as Directors at comparable payment firms.
3) Emphasis on ethics
4) Openness of management. You can have meetings with exec. management as freely as with anyone else in the company.
5) Ability to learn. You get to work on many things while at Intuit and hone your skill sets.
Cons
1) Career growth. Intuit is very slow to promote and you can be at the same position for 5-10 years with no promotions.
2) Hinders innovation. Intuit has grown by inorganic innovation and acquisitions (Mint, Digital Insight, Homestead, etc). Hence it is very hard to be innovative within the company.
Pros
People, healthy work-life balance, good benefits, good managers who listen to their employees
Cons
Lack of innovation, sometimes too much process driven
Pros
The People are great at Intuit
Cons
Internal transferring is tough at Intuit
Advice to Senior Management
Hire within and provide more clarity in how to reach career aspirations
Pros
Given lots of freedom and responsibility. Lots of exposure to high-level leadership. Competitive compensation for a job right out of school. Fantastic to have the opportunity to try 4 different roles within your first 2 years out of college
Cons
Products aren't as sexy as some other tech companies...but that is in your control...
Advice to Senior Management
The RDP program is a great source of information regarding upcoming technologies and start-ups. Don't hesitate to reach out to any of the associates on a 0ne-on-one basis or put together a group event.
Pros
telecommuting (if your manager approves)
benefits beyond medical/dental/vision
Cons
poor leadership
no growth potential
promotions to underqualified
inequitable pay
too many tools get in the way of work
Advice to Senior Management
take a closer look at middle management. find out the real reason why good people are leaving the company.
Pros
Young employees are valued and expected to make an immediate impact. You are trained well and the culture is extremely supportive of life/work balance.
Cons
They don't offer free food like Google.
Pros
-360 performance review
-spotlight awards
-employee mobility
Cons
-politics (but every company has it)
Advice to Senior Management
-retain your top employees, manage out the low performers.
Pros
Good people, competitive compensation. Lots of smart people who you can learn a lot from. Everyone is respectful and the company does make an effort to help employees with work/life balance.
Cons
Inconsistent management abilities - some senior managers are great, others make you question their decision making. Absolutely no plan when it comes to career development - most managers don't have the time or make the effort to discuss career development with you. Career advancement is not based on results but rather who you know and the reputation you build.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop micro-managing and start trusting your front line folks more. Granted some oversight is needed but don't choke innovation and put barriers in front of people.
Pros
People focused and drive towards innovation
Cons
Information sharing across all levels
Advice to Senior Management
Intuit balanced internal promotions and bringing in new blood
Pros
Good salary, good bonus, flexible working hours. Competitive benefit. Company stock is doing very well. Innovation is highly encouraged within the company
Cons
Re-org very often. You might get 4 different managers in one year. Not much chance to grow in career. The year review is a joke.
Advice to Senior Management
Management should learn better from failed project, not repeat the same thing again and again. The company should hired real web experienced managers and architects.
