I have been working at Intuitive Surgical full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The technical challenges range from generic to seriously innovative and there is plenty of opportunity to stretch oneself. Managers are generally respectable and helpful. All of this with the goal of easing some horrible ailment for mankind, what's not to love?

    Cons

The compensation system is based on your title, length of tenure and what some contract firm tells them is fair for the industry. This is fine if the work you do is comparable to your years of experience but may be too coarse for those outside of the norm.

I have been working at Intuitive Surgical full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The company offers competitive salaries, low-cost medical, nice employee stock purchase plans, cash bonus and some stock options in an attempt to attract and keep talented people. Because the company is faster-paced, it's good to know you have quality talent around you. People on the whole are more accountable here because they do have a greater sense of ownership.
The product is great and the company really focuses on how the product really helps people. The executive management team is very good and has the company moving in the right direction. ISI is the unquestioned market leader and has positioned itself to stay that way for a long time.

    Cons

The company is now too mature to be considered a start-up, so it's having a lot of new growing pains as it attempts to fight off pending competition. Managers who were good at pushing to get MORE productivity at any cost, just to keep up with explosive growth, are now struggling when having to introduce processes that maintain productivity while improving operational efficiency for long-term growth.
While the executive management team inspires great confidence in the direction of the company, an alarmingly growing segment of middle-management is being exposed as ill-equipped and unready to transition this company to the next phase of maturation. Too many of these folks are there because of tenure, being rewarded after having survived very busy periods, and it's very apparent that they lack the skill set to match the changing requirements of the business. We've seen a mini-exodus where many of the good individual contributors who have grown the company, have decided to take their gains and start fresh elsewhere instead of suffering along.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clear out the mid-level managers who are now holding the company back and causing the really talented employees to leave. Internal surveys and half-baked sensitivity trainings illustrate that the problems exist, but the employees are getting restless because we see too little actual change. Talk is cheap, time to start walking.

I worked at Intuitive Surgical full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great product. Many smart people working there, but many are treated badly and are looking to leave as soon as possible.

    Cons

Terrible place to be an engineer. The engineering culture is a culture of fear of senior management and covering ones own backside. That is how all engineering decisions are made. Engineers are routinely told they are not allowed to take PTO, and routinely told they must work weekends. It has been that way for many years. The projects the engineers are working on are always understaffed, in fact, understaffing is part of the corporate culture, senior management is proud of it. Engineers are never part the process of making the schedule.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please stay at Intuitive, so I don't have to work for you anywhere else. They way you treat your employees may have some short term benefits, but will destroy the company long term.

I worked at Intuitive Surgical as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The culture is the first think I bring up when I talk about my experience. It was incredible. They worry less about what analysts will say and more about what is best for the patient. The team I worked with was welcoming and great to work with. Lastly the company treats its employees very well and values each person's contribution.

    Cons

There was no big negative of working for Intuitive. It took some time to get adjusted to the time change between the Sunnyvale and Norcross office. There was not much training at all for my position. I was fine with this because I prefer to learn from doing but this could be a negative for some. Also at times one can feel disconnected from other groups within the business org.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My biggest piece of advice would be to not lose the culture as the company continues to grow. Keep the level of bureaucracy to a minimum and continue to foster people's curiosity. It is important to continue to recognize that innovation can come from anyone in any department. Lastly never forget to remind the employees of what they are working toward and the people they are affecting.

I have been working at Intuitive Surgical full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

You get to meet a lot of smart and talented engineers. You also get to work on the most advanced medical device in the world. Lastly, you learn a lot from a company going through growth pains.

    Cons

No consideration of work-life balance due to 6 day a week work schedule, management gives empty promises, layoffs come out of nowhere, no structure and DOP's/SOP's not followed through by most people. It's hard to work and get things done when requirements are being changed over and over and management and HR are biased toward certain few people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Company has changed completely in the years I've been here. If you want to make quality products, then make the place inviting and good place to work for as it was before. It's no wonder products are recalled over and over as there is no structure.

I worked at Intuitive Surgical as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The company is filled with people excited about the work they do and how it directly impacts and benefits patients. The work environment is friendly and conducive to productivity without being too overbearing.

    Cons

The nature of working at a medical device company necessitated a number of compliance trainings that may or may not have remotely anything to do with the project being worked on.

Coworkers are extremely kind and friendly. Great cafeteria. The internship program is great for college and grad students.

    Cons

Bureaucracy can be problematic. What you get out of our your internship really depends on which department you're in.

I have been working at Intuitive Surgical as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Internship Exhibit, Robananza (High school competition funded by Intuitive Surgical), terrific interaction among co-workers. Mentors were very responsive and always asked questions.

    Cons

Workload seemed a bit light at times. Internship program is new but definitely improving.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure mentors are prepared to take on interns. Requires a time investment to teach someone skills and not everyone is willing to do so.
