I worked at Iridium Satellite full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great Benefits, superior product knowledge from former Motorola employees. Good pay.

    Cons

Old boys club. Fresh blood is non-existent. They all hire in their own likeness. Older, white, teleco guys that "take care of each other" at each employer they migrate to. It doesn't matter if they're good or not. Most of these guys-- are not. The employees are not listened to, and if the lower level speaks up, it's stifled by the time it reaches the top.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The board needs to ditch Desch and the top C's. The employees don't trust, nor follow them. Issuing worthless stock only elongates the inevitable. The good employees are slowly seeing the light.

I have been working at Iridium Satellite full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

A lot of exciting and innovative events are currently in the works. The company has potential and has started adding development paths and has initiated employee appreciation activities.

    Cons

New hires are paid under what the position and skillset would imply. They try to compensate with stock options which are not worth much right now but could be in 5 or 6 years. The company is quite top-heavy and management tends to bring in their own teams from previous jobs instead of promoting within. There is a lack of communication from the top down. Departments change who they report to and the employees find out through the rumor mill or after the fact. Staff meeting to keep us apprised of changes in staff, reporting, systems, new products are rarely held.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue developing career paths, pay us what we are worth, learn to acknowledge and praise your employees and communicate changes BEFORE they happen. Understand that every employee has a vested interest in the success of our company and deserves the respect and consideration to know what is going on or coming along.

I have been working at Iridium Satellite as a contractor

    Pros

A very strong management team. All are extremely well qualified and experienced. The CEO does a great job of leading the company. Everyone on the product management and marketing team work well together which creates a good environment for collaboration.

    Cons

Politics within other groups can make some work challenging but this exists in almost any other organization. It's just a matter of making sure other functional managers are always aware of the help you require from their team and try not to step in their territory without permission.
