I worked at Isilon, A Division of EMC full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Isilon has many of the pro's of working at a start-up -- fun culture, a true meritocracy, aggressive fast pace -- while at the same time it has the stability and benefits of a fortune 500 company.

    Cons

Sometimes the big Boston EMC culture seeps in and it doesn't resonate that well.

    Advice to Management

Stay true to your heritage and keep innovating

I have been working at Isilon, A Division of EMC full-time

    Pros

    - Some very good, smart people - free beer & lots of free food - Interesting technology with no real competitors. - You can do NO work & get away with it.

    Cons

    - You can do NO work & get away with it. Many people do. - Management is a complete mess. - Movement within the company is discouraged, even though they say it isn't. - They don't nurture & build up their own employees. - Pay & PTO is not competitive for this industry. - The best people are leaving & not being replaced w/ quality.

    Advice to Management

Stop managing up & start taking care of your team. Start promoting people at a reasonable rate. This company used to be good.

I worked at Isilon, A Division of EMC (Less than a year)

    Pros

Really great environment with smart, friendly, and helpful people Mentors are assigned to each intern and are very helpful Lots of parties and outings Really invest in their interns They save some of their most exciting projects for their interns. Heavy emphasis on work/life balance. Provided orca pass for commute

    Cons

Live downtown if you can, busing in and out of Seattle is time consuming.

    Advice to Management

Keep on doing what you're doing.

I have been working at Isilon, A Division of EMC full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The product is complex and interesting, the problem space requires performance-oriented thinking, and the division ins a meritocracy.

    Cons

Development infrastructure is in shambles making it hard to get anything done, pay is below average, EMC involvement limits product opportunities

I worked at Isilon, A Division of EMC as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very friendly coworkers. There are interesting projects IF you can get into the right one. Good work life balance.

    Cons

Managers seem clueless at what employees to put on what jobs. Some engineers are resigned to producing power point slides for management all day, with little to no design work. Organization is uber management heavy

    Advice to Management

Make sure you know what employees to put on what jobs. Engineers don't want to make power point slides all day, accountants don't want to make power point slides all day either. Heck, what's with all of the power point slides anyway. Don't we have work to do?

    Pros

Amazing benefits, great facility, pay and work environment. Challenging and rewarding.

    Cons

Hard to get headcount, HR takes forever. Too many people from Microsoft, and its awful competitive culture is starting to really show a negative effect in the office. People like to do things the way they've always been done.

    Advice to Management

Be open to new ideas and make it easier for people to get things going.

Solid job, good perks, culture has changed from that of a start-up to a big company after the EMC acquisition.

I worked at Isilon, A Division of EMC full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Free coffee, tea, snacks. Great rooftop patio, nice location in Pioneer Square. Smart, talented coworkers. Good hours and acceptable pay. Free sodas, and a keg in the break room.

    Cons

Growing pains are still ongoing, and the small company has been subsumed by it's acquirer. Frustrating amount of politics. Salaries seem lower than the industry standard. I didn't see a path for career advancement.

    Pros

It's plain and simple-a fun place to work. There is a high learning curve and drive to succeed, but the company doesn't leave you to drown. There is a plethora of trainings, support, and SMEs to utilize, and everybody is incredibly supportive.

    Cons

Leadership is still forming due to a lot of organizational changes in the last 3 years.

  11. A great place to work and grow, both for the ability to advance in the company and in your overall career.

I have been working at Isilon, A Division of EMC full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of room to grow and many directions to move in. There are dozens of positions open on a constant basis, so there is always opportunity to move around and try new things.

    Cons

Advancement can sometimes be limited by location - sometimes the position you want requires relocation to another office in another part of the world. They require reqs for promotion, so you have to wait until a req is made available for the position you want in the locale you want or it can be a painful process for an out of cycle promotion.
