I have been working at Islands Restaurants full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

At times it has a fun environment. Fun crew.

    Cons

Smoke and mirrors. They say one thing to get you on board. Then it all changes. Don't pay nearly enough for the hours and work they ask for. Way way too much micro management. Find any reason not to give you a raise

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your managers more. Newer younger managers make less than most bartenders and some servers. Pay them more to care more to protect your company.

I worked at Islands Restaurants part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Very fast paced environment that allows for growth and advancement to higher positions if desired. Tips are a plus though they are different at each location. Perfect for a college student that needs a job to be scheduled around a school schedule.

    Cons

Management is constantly changing. Over 4 GMs in 4 years and over 10 Assistant manager changes within that time. Each manager implements different ways of running the store which leaves the employees in confusion and trying to learn the new rules every time management changes. No constant/stable work culture. Upper management micromanages everything. If you aren't selling liquor then you aren't considered a good employee at islands.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I understand alcohol has a high profit margin but it's not always the servers fault if customers are not wanting to throw a couple drinks back in front of their kids at dinner. Stop changing management so much. Find ways to motivate employees and recognize them for their hard work and not just by their alcohol sales.

    Pros

50% off meals, flexible with your school schedule, and laid back job. Good for a first job if you want to go and work in the resturant business.

    Cons

First off, I wouldn't suggest NOT working here at all. Islands is a terrible place to work, employees are clique and gossip all the time about other co workers, customers, fellow employees. Managers change every time. 5 or more people tell you do do things differently because they don't want t be stressed out and care about their OWN well being at work when its just how the restaurant industry works. Management, especially the GM definitely plays favoritism and im pretty sure he is racist as well. Managers say they care about their employees and overall people who work there usually have a negative attitude of hate working there behind the scenes. A lot drama behind the scenes and managers do not communicate well with their fellow employees. Takes there shifts away for no reason because their performance for a a certain shift did not meet expectations, etc. Managers really do not communicate well with fellow employees for a lot of reasons for taking away their shifts and other reasons. You have to figure it out yourself and its like a dog eat dog game at Islands. Everyone wants to get he best hours and compete to get the most money, hard to get shifts covered, and no one cares about anyone here! It is not like working as a team at all and everyone is just rude! You have to ask to move up after working for a while or a really long time, depends. and usually if you are white and the GM favors you, you move up right away even if you have had no experience. Bad hourly pay and rarely make any tips depending on the time you come on or what section you have!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a better management team. It definitely sucks.

    Pros

Flexible work schedules, fun environment, potential for advancement and great way to get customer service experience.

    Cons

Change in bosses a lot. Being a new employee it's hard to get time off. If you want to call in sick, you have to find someone to cover your shift.

I have been working at Islands Restaurants part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Serving, average around $25 an hour at our restaurant which is supposedly one of the busier ones. Jobs pretty easy. Some really cool people work at what seems to be all Islands restaurants. Met some of the people I am closest to now at where I currently work. Flexible around your schedule if you are in school or if you have another job.

    Cons

Sometimes new managers do not know what they are doing. It seems like when that happens, they get talked to for not knowing what they are doing and then try to act like they know what they are doing by being a total turd. Just saying though. Customers are a pain in the butt sometimes, but where are they not.

I worked at Islands Restaurants part-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The flexibility and loyalty to veteran employees is top notch. This only goes for those with good work ethics though. Like all other successful businesses, they look for hard-working people who are willing to be open-minded about their training process. Follow these two key steps and they will treat you with respect, allow you to grow as an individual, and encourage you to follow your dreams!

    Cons

Their corporate structure has been slightly changing overtime allowing for an influx of younger individuals who have no sense of what it means to have good work-ethics. That being said, it has nothing to do with the company itself, but rather a personal negative opinion on the millennial generation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try not to contribute to any acts of irresponsibility by current employees and hold them accountable for their actions.

Very strict and corporate.. but fun atmosphere.

I have been working at Islands Restaurants

    Pros

Fun atmosphere when the managers aren't freaking out about one thing or another. It is not a stuffy environment. People, guests, and managers are always having fun, joking around with one another, and overall trying to have a good time.

    Cons

it is very corporate meaning they have tons of insignificant rules such as no nailpolish other than pink or red, no buns braids or TOO HIGH ponytails.. no abnormal hair colors or styles, men must always be clean shaven, if your nail polish is chipped you are removing it before your shift, you are only as good as your alcohol percentage that night (and even when it is excellent no one will remember it past tonight...you will still be scolded for your low alcohol tomorrow)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management honestly tends to be so concerned with all the rules they have to follow eg. high alcohol percentage, meeting labor hours, keeping comps low, etc.. that the positive reinforcement tends to get lost in all the mess. To be honest sometimes you can do all the right things and mistakes happen or the fish don't bite on the alcohol line. It doesn't mean your employees aren't hard working people who deserve to be appreciated a little bit more often. You tend to only hear when you do something wrong around places like this.

    Pros

    weekends off for GM
    50 hour work week
bonus not based on operation or productiviy so you may get lucky and get most of your bonus

    Cons

Corporate office is still learning how to run a company
Higher ups are all buddies and feel untouchable
Manager turnover is high due to ... its not a good place to work if you are a educated and qualified operator. this place is for servers who work they way up, not experienced business people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

really look into your Directors and Regionals

    Pros

They give you a monthly stipend to use at any Islands restaurant.

    Cons

Corporate says whatever they have to to get you in the door. Then you quickly find out it's all smoke and mirrors. They make any excuse to not hand out bonuses, raises, &/or promotions. I could go on but I would be here for hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your managers, give them their bonuses, and stop treating them like crap.
