    It's OK

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Spokane, WA

ProsDecent paycheck, interesting industry, and the people are mostly nice.

ConsPolitics are extreme, you must be part of the in-crowd to get promoted. Not much of a career path unless you are willing to travel up to 75% of the time. Training is rare. It feels like the company is poised for either a takeover or big layoffs.

Advice to Senior ManagementTell us what's going on, even when the news isn't great. The gossip throughout Itron is constant and demoralizing.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Big corporation, little care of its people

    Software Developer (Current Employee)

ProsThe benefits are not bad. Depending on the position you may have a good compensation.

ConsManagement has no vision. All they know is how to reduce every available benefit from year to year.

Used to be great, now struggling

    Senior Technical Consultant (Current Employee)

ProsPleasant work environment, great people, little politics.
Comparatively large number of enthusiastic employees with initiative in lower ranks.
Promotion policies are good up to middle management.

ConsCompany is currently undergoing crisis for a lack of strategic focus. Trying to "me-too" with competitors instead of assembling talent to tackle Smart Grid proactively.

Senior management is mostly male and white, tired, lacks original thinking, indecisive, depressing for troops. Does not "get" software, Seems more focused on satisfying stock analysts by laying off low-level staff than sticking to a strategy.

Advice to Senior ManagementClean out dead wood at HQ. Promote younger, more female managers into senior management, or hire an outsider or two.

    Good company, poor management

Technical Consultant II (Former Employee) Liberty Lake, WA

ProsFantastic people to work with, company wants to help make an impact on the future.

ConsPoor management, HR that is not willing to clean house of their managers/directors despite many formal complaints. Not willing to pay employees what the market says they should.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on better managers and employee retention

OK company wish management understood systems and software.

Software Engineer (Current Employee) Raleigh, NC

    ProsHard problems and fast moving.

ConsThe company as a whole does not think like a software solutions company, however it wants to be one.

    Advice to Senior ManagementNone.

    It's ok.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Liberty Lake, WA

ProsGood people to work with. Lots of friends. Flexible work hours.

ConsManagement doesn't listen to the "troops". Too many politics for a comfortable work place.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to more than the Sales staff.

Is a good place to work while the revenue is coming in.

Senior Technical Consultant (Current Employee) San Diego, CA

ProsItron benefited greatly from the government stimulating the utility companies to investing the Smart-Grid technologies. They treated their people fine while the Smart-Grid investments were being made.

ConsThe government is no longer stimulating investment in Smart-Grid technologies, so the revenue stream is drying up and Itron is already changing how they treat employees. It is not a great place to work at this point, the end of 2012, and they will probably soon be MORE layoffs.

Advice to Senior ManagementFind methods that produce steady streams of revenue rather than quick hits. Push harder into the software arena and charge for software licensing, upgrades and support.

    – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
