Excessive Micro-management

Truck Service Technician (Current Employee)
Columbus, OH

I have been working at J.B. Hunt for more than a year

ProsExcellent safety program, dayshift hours. Very Structured work environment, web based computer system is simple to undserstand.

ConsOne-word: Micro management. If you are mechanic, you will be yelled at for taking too long on a job. You won't go a week without the manager threatening to fire you if your time numbers are not good enough. If the manager or supervisor does not like how you are doing a job, they will stop you and try to get you to do it their way, all while yelling at you and insulting you. They really like to "crack the whip" at technicians and partsman. No matter how good you are, it is never enough for them. Management and Supervisors do not follow company policy on training.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of unrealistic performance goals for you shop and just look at overall performance.

Unprofessional Culture and Stubborn to Change

Programmer (Current Employee)
Lowell, AR

I have been working at J.B. Hunt full-time for more than a year

ProsBonuses. I could always look forward to a bonus every quarter.

ConsGeneral lack of professionalism and laziness in corporate culture (dress code, work ethic, technology standards, etc.). On my first "Jeans Day", a Team Member wore sweat pants and a t-shirt--unacceptable at a corporate HQ.
They are set in their ways and resistant to inevitable change. A large portion of the IT staff have been there for 15+ years and have bred a culture of resistance and stubbornness when it comes to technological change. JBHT will never get great developers when they don't strive to leaders on the edge of technology and technological standards. The saddest and most irritating part was that they were excited and proud of "advancements" that were about 5-10+ years old.
Management knew I was bored and generally unchallenged in my job, but little to nothing about it.

Advice to Senior ManagementEstablish some accountability for your corporate culture. The way people dress, act, and work create lasting first impressions.
Sink some funds into R&D. There are so many technologies that JBHT could benefit from (RFID namely) that they don't invest in because "we've never done it like that".
Take IT seriously. JBHT could be so much more if you hired the best developers and keep them busy. Separating IT into business units is not conducive to collaborative thinking among developers. It only restricts personal resources and inhibits optimal output.

Its a stepping stone

Senior Carrier Sales Coordinator (Current Employee)
Overland Park, KS

I have been working at J.B. Hunt full-time for more than a year

ProsEvery day you face a new challenge. You will never get board with what you are doing. If you have the ride mind set and can hit your goals there are opportunities to get promoted. But that does not mean you will get more money. Just a new title. The company is currently looking to expand, and grow quick. Once again this gives you the chance to be promoted. You are not limited to just 1 job function. They are good about letting you learn new duties and take on more responsibility. Most of the people you work with are younger so it is easy to get along with them if this is your first job. A great group of people that are in the same position as you.

ConsMoney. You put in 50+ hours a week, work weekends, skip lunches and don't get paid for it. Not only that but when you do all you can to do well they will look at you and say " Its not what you did for me today, its what you can do for me tomorrow."

Terrible follow up. If you want something done you have to stay in front of management and your other team members. You have to become border line annoying. I was made a lot of promises that were not fulfilled. And I was getting tired of it.

If you are looking for a team environment you won't find it here. Everyone is out for themselves. Each branch has a separate budget and that is all they care about. You will spend more time fighting with other people to do the right thing then you will working some times. The management never knows whats going on because the "rules" are always changing.

You will also be told you need to focus on 1 thing on Monday and by Wednesday it has changed. They are all over the place and have a flavor of the month mentality when it comes to solving a problem.

The company does not like to fire people. So if you are on a team with a lot of lazy people you will have to pick up their slack. Also a lot of the people that have been their a while bully the new employees.

There is no loyalty. The company would rather bring in outside people to fill upper management spots then promote people that have been with the company for years. They will also pay those people more. Unless you play office politics you will be stuck working for nothing to become something

If you are looking for a job to gain good experience in all sorts of job functions this is a good place to go. But do not get caught up in it. There are green pastures.

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn to praise your employees more. An award a month given to the "poplar" employee isn't enough. You have a lot of good talent that never gets recognized. Upper management needs to spend more time on the floor. They are locked in their offices and don't have time for entry level employees.

Promote within. Stop bringing in management from the competitor. We all know they make more money then current employees and they don't know the culture.

Great Company for Starting a Career!

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at J.B. Hunt full-time

ProsExcellent pay for recent college grads and willing to hire those with little to no experience in the professional workforce. Most managers are easy-going and patient while training. You gain a lot of experience working with a wide array of people (truck drivers, customers, sales people, etc.).

ConsRaises are negligible and the salary bumps for promotions are relatively low. Within a couple years you will find yourself qualified for logistics/supply chain positions paying 15-20% more in salary. Hours can also be very long. Be prepared to cross 70+ hours some weeks. Most weeks hover around 50-55 hours. Also, many management teams are kept as skeleton crews. This makes advancement difficult because there is no one there to train as a back-up to replace you.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe management pay scale needs to be reviewed given the hours put in by the management teams. A lot of teams run on skeleton crews (fewer managers than they were budgeted for) and this damages the work-life balance. The manager training program needs to be brought back to how it used to be as well. Many managers can't advance because they aren't given someone to train as a back-up/replacement. This leaves them stuck where they are and the end up leaving the company out of frustration.

A year and a half of OTR driving for the company

OTR Driver (Former Employee)

I worked at J.B. Hunt full-time for more than a year

ProsThe terminal in Chicago has a cafeteria. Usually, could find an empty trailer after home time fairly quickly. The staff at the terminals are usually friendly.

ConsThe other terminals don't have cafeterias. Most of the terminals aren't comfortable. That's par for the course in the industry, though. It's a bizarre lifestyle. I think some drivers get truck madness, like space madness.

Advice to Senior ManagementI was an owner/operator later and could turn down some the loads going to places like DC or Staten Island, thank god. The loads to those places don't even pay well. If they want 52' trailers in those areas, they shouldn't use sleeper cabs in my opinion.

Give drivers a head's up about not getting off I-95 in NYC even if it is a "truck route". The height of bridges are mislabeled and the truck routes are confusing (other than to Hunt's Point). I was fired for hitting a low bridge there. I didn't know an interstate could have bridges marked 12'6" and went off course to avoid them, which got me further in a bind. I was black balled via the DAC report, but I bought my own authority and delivered food there many times after that. I learned the hard way how to navigate through that area. It's not for rookies.

Excellent opportunity to gain experience

Operations Supervisor (Current Employee)
Columbus, OH

I have been working at J.B. Hunt full-time for less than a year

ProsNo day is ever the same... You will face constant challenges and learn a lot fast!! Lots of opportunity for growth in a organizaiton with a great product and service in all areas. National company with opportunities to move...

ConsYou will work 50-65 hours and possibly have a on-call phone on the weekends...It's borderline unacceptable to move outside the region and you will get no support to move outside of it...Poor benefits... No Vacations for a year and after a year, 5 days... 401k is basically a 3% (6% of half) match...Extremely stressful work environment (Definitely losing hair). Very poor training from the get-go... Sink or Swim mentality. Depending on the customer you work for, you are subject to their hours of operation... Retail (2/3 days off a year) some other industries (every holiday).

Advice to Senior ManagementMy only advice is 5 vacation days after 6 months, 7 after a year... after 6 months you have learned so much and your constant interaction with aggressive under-educated individuals wears on your mentality significantly.
