    I worked at J. C. Penney full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Strong teamwork structure (in some departments), postive managers with daily pep rallies

    Cons

Mininum wage, hours, raises and benefits not available, if your a closer there is a lot on your plate to make sure the store is perfect and day people barely assist in mantaining the store, lots of pressure to get credit applications regardless if your sales or stock!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop hiring lazy high schoolers who do not want to come to work or even work when they are on the clock, pay just a tad more and maybe you would actually achieve that "great customer service" you boast about, and ensure all employees are doing their part all day so that it doesn't pile up for the closers.

    I worked at J. C. Penney part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great co workers, built long relationships with many people there. Great diverse group of people make the whole experience enjoyable despite the bad management staff.

    Cons

Long hours, especially during holidays. Poor pay even for retail, no reward for accomplishing tasks. Just a thanks and move you to the next place to work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work on leadership skills of all on floor managers. This will help reduce the turnover rate.

    I worked at J. C. Penney full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great customers, excellent wardrobe opportunities and a range of departments to work in.

    Cons

Management structure is poor. Opportunity to advance is based on who you know and not actual work ethic. Higher management team needs evaluation of skill and active reprimand for those that do not meet criteria.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Build a structured curriculum for associates to follow in order to better achieve higher levels and or positions.

    Pros

The pros would definitely be the people I worked with. I loved the coworkers and my management team.

    Cons

    Sooo many cons..
Long hours, crazy customers, horrible pay, bad scheduling, hard to move up and honestly who wants to, and in the past few years after I left, they have even more issues.

I have been working at J. C. Penney full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The people at this job are usually very friendly. Mostly because we have to be. The employees are more likely to stick together.

    Cons

The financial growth potential that is available at this company is very limited. Most people will never get to a job that pays them more than 30,000 a year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It would be nice if this job was actually worthy of being a career. There are many hard working people that get looked over time and time again.

    Routine idiots

Former Employee - Sales Associate in Manteca, CA

    I worked at J. C. Penney part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Flexible hours, tedious tasks, clean place to work, choose your own clothes, generous employee discounts that include sales, clearance and special prices in addition to employee discount, ability to self-manage,

    Cons

Customer service, management support favors the customer and is willing to throw their employees under the bus to make them happy, emphasis on credit card signups, discrimination on the use of coupons

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Maybe employees would be more customer service oriented if they believed that management would back up their judgement calls and hold up rules for customers instead of bending them so that the customer is happy
