I worked at J. Crew full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

at the beginning it was a very enjoyable experience and it was easy to get more money and move up.

    Cons

once you reach management they seem to take more care of people who are cheap (salary wise) or have been with the company more than 10 years, regardless of the success of the individual.

I worked at J. Crew part-time for less than a year

    Pros

The training is extensive and actually quite helpful for those just getting started in retail. Excellent employee discount and incentives. Customers are generally very friendly and enjoyable to work with.

    Cons

Work environment was quite clique-y and overall, it was not a particularly positive place to be. A lot of gossiping and complaints about management and other team members.

I have been working at J. Crew part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Will be recognized if you put in the effort. A lot of transparency between senior staff and associates. Storewide bonuses apply to everyone.

    Cons

Oftentimes little diversity so intercultural communication between associates/customers are compromised; associate discounts sometimes equal or less than online/in store promotions

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep being an overwhelmingly positive influence and your team's effort will glow.

I worked at J. Crew part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great clothes (sometimes it gets a bit questionable), met some great people along the way.

    Cons

A few awful customers here and there (why is running out of a certain sweater considered "absolutely ridiculous"?) but it happens no matter where you go.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think management expects better quality service from employees. The pay rate should reflect that (at least, in comparison to other retail shops). I made a tad more initially at Banana Republic.

I worked at J. Crew full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Wonderful employee discounts and perks
Great environment to come to daily
Fast paced and quick to change, new challenges

    Cons

Little respect for employee work/life balance
    Management can sometimes be catty
Mediocre pay for low level employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop getting rid of employee discounts and perks! They improve the quality of life so much for lower level employees and they are useful for management to incentivize good performance.

I worked at J. Crew part-time for less than a year

    Pros

My supervisors and managers were usually very nice people who genuinely liked the product we were selling.

    Cons

At the end of the night the manager/supervisor closing the shift had too many tasks to complete while the rest of the workers had to hang around and fold for hours until allowed to leave. Also, I personally did not absolutely love the product I was selling, and found that the quality of some items were sub-par.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a way to streamline the closing process to maintain shorter work hours.

    I worked at J. Crew

    Pros

Working at J.Crew has its own unique way to show you retailing. They give you a strong sense of a company is willing to strive for the best. The are willing to find new ideas and always looking for modernism however they always know their target market. And you get a great employee discount!!!

    Cons

Working retail in general has its general cons of not being very glamorous. That same goes for J.Crew not the best hours and breaking for 15minutes gives you no time to do anything and being in one store gets boring but that is most retail positions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to be more open to learning who there employee are. Learning what there goals are or where they strive to be with a company will help with better positions because not everyone works great in sales or certain sections of a store.

    I worked at J. Crew

    Pros

Great discount on regular and sale items. Management makes quick promotions to asscociates if you show you are a hard worker.

    Cons

Scheduling is often a major conflict for most all employees. You are given few hours during summer months, and expected not to have another life during busier months.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Strive to be the best! If you can, visit a top 10 store or two, and get a feel for how flawless they close the store, stay tight on inter loss-prevention, and make your associates feel proud of the product and the jobs they are doing.

    I worked at J. Crew

    Pros

The job gives great benefits if you love shopping for quality clothing. It does not take long to get accustomed to the job and there are always interesting people around.

    Cons

The job is not great long term prospect. You will have to become at the very least a store manager in order to consider this for more than a side job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The management at J. Crew was definitely competent. They were able to help with getting acquainted with the job and get you in touch with other employees.
