    Pros

This is a culture of kindness, with employees and customers. You are given an immense amount of freedom with which to build you business within the standards of the company. The sales philosophy is unique in the industry. It is about the customer, not the sale, and we mean that. If you have strong time management skills, the work / life balance is yours for the taking. The insurance for management is generous. We have co-founders, executives, and supervisors that truly care about you, whether you are part time, on up to management.

    Cons

There are IT issues that improve daily as we grow.

    Pros

Lovely people, small group in marketing we rocked it growing the website biz fourfold and evolving the brand to a (short-lived) modern new place

    Cons

So so many. No creative direction, growth too much for old school employees to handle
Above all legacy issues with founder staying on when new regime was put in place. Needless to say the brand evolve went nowhere,

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look around and see what your competitors are doing in terms of multichannel customer experience. Realize it's 2015 not 1978. Listen to people, don;t just bloviate. Otherwise you build new stores that don't make money and have a subpar commerce experience across the board.
Consider cleaning the office and maintaining it. It was filthy and never right temp.

    Pros

Salary, Benefits, and clothing allowance. You work with great people. The store associates are amazing. THe company knows how to launch a store, quickly, efficiently and beautifully decorated.

    Cons

No marketing direction. Leadership and management team does not know how to build a brand in 2015 nor strategize to keep the business running strong to 2020. Over-produce the same clothing year after year. Nothing new. The VP of Ecommerce who used to be there formed a foundation to build growth and a team. If every department could do what she did, they would be much more successful.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - keep your talent!!!!
    - hire a forward thinking CEO - the company needs younger management. Owners and CEO need to move to the board.
    - get an HR department, not someone who works part-time
    - create corporate structure and not silo departments.

I worked at J. Mclaughlin part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Clothing quota and flexible hours

    Cons

Absentee upper management made it easy for a dishonest store manager, not located in NYC, to keep limited hours or not show up. Sales associates gets little or no respect from upper management. I've heard they now have a sign in timeclock on the computer, hopefully, this helped the situation. I would imagine its still easy for a manager to give sales person her code to sign them in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep better tabs on your store managers. Respect your sales people.

I worked at J. Mclaughlin full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Decent environment to work in when I was there however I heard that changed. Summer Fridays

    Cons

Very disorganized, the people that work there are not friendly. Bad pay, terrible benefits. The toilets weren’t working for an entire day there and they still had us come into work and had buckets of water by the toilet to flush it… was pretty gross. There was also a rat problem in the office. When we would come into work we have to wipe our desks down to get the rat droppings off of it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get better managers that don't have open affairs in the office. Clean the place up and treat your employees better.
