Pros
Challenging projects.
Entrepreneurial environment.
Cooperative employes.
State of the art equipment and opportunity to work with highly skilled engineers.
Always had a chance to see how the business end operates when working in a very technical area.
Cons
Money is tight which can make it difficult to institute improvements.
They are in the process of down sizing some areas. If you are unlucky enough to be working in one of those areas your job could be a risk. As expected this is no different from any other company in the same finical situation.
Advice to Senior Management
Companies that were acquired whose products are not telecom related but proffiable should be given more finical resources relative to the revenue that division brought into the company.
Pros
balance your life and work well, so you can have more time with your family... actually it is a good place to stay
Cons
less opportunities for the employees, because the telecommunication test industry is shrinking those years, and the competitions from other companies. the employee-firing occurs every day
Advice to Senior Management
communicate with the employees more often, direct ing them, probing them, helping them get some more promotions in the work.
Pros
It is very important to be the your own boss when you are working on things and deciding what to do next with feedback from your manager.
Cons
It is probably very common in the market but that there are stringent time limitations to come up with something new that can be applied right away.
Advice to Senior Management
The leaders should realize and tell business managers about what is though and why things might take longer and needs more time and effort.
Pros
1) Good salaries.
2) latest technologies
3) Bonus plan
4) Good co-works
5) Hot lunches brought in
6) good coffee and tea
Cons
1) General manager is constantly changing
2) Lack of direction.
3) Upper management will lie - so it's not their fault
4) Blame game
5) Sending work off-shore
6) No vacation time - only discretionary time off (hope your supervisor likes you)
7) You will be asked to work weekends at the end of each release
Advice to Senior Management
Own your mistakes
Pros
Flexibility like working from home (in fact, too much that some people abuses it).
Cons
Our team was working so hard to meet the project goals, and suddenly, out of nowhere, the higher management told us that the whole team is redundant.
And this is coming from an employee who was head-hunted over barely a year ago. Why a sudden change in plan? If they intend to make this team redundant, why hire us in the first place ?
And I'm not the worst guy who suffered this; there was another team member of mine who just joined for about 1 month. Imagine how that guy felt ?
Don't have a decent plan or product road map ?
The software quality and usablity of the product I worked on is a joke. There is no code review, no test traceability to requirements, and lack of high level requirements themselves. In short, the developer himself have to determine what the requirements are, how easy to install, to configure, etc, etc. A lot depends on the developer. If the developer is dishonest and claim all the unit test have passed, nobody is going to check them. The same applies to subsystem test team. If they claim all the tests have been executed and passed, there isn't anyone to check whether it's true.
There is no software quality engineer that will perform gate-checking or whatsoever. This organization is probably worse than CMMI Level 1.
Advice to Senior Management
Please don't hire and fire. If you intend to hire, make sure your plan for that team is valid for at least couple of years.
Pros
Benefits good relax, difficult, challenging, good ,people, innovative, bold, nice, close, people, clean people
, good people, nice people, happy people
Cons
Outsourcing hurts the moral of evey sigle employee and I beleive will hurt the company in the it future endevers
Advice to Senior Management
Continue to get feedback from employees because they know whats will work in the company and do not rely on outsourcing
Pros
While i was there The people i worked with were good players. Good career growth opportunity. High visibility to management
Cons
As a result of many acquisitions can be chaotic at times. Lots of fires to put out disrupts routine business matters
Advice to Senior Management
Get organized and focus on fewer core competencies. Allign compensation with achievement. Drive for continuos improvement. Empower employees across the co
Pros
JDSU has chosen to only operate in high growth markets and only if they can be the #1 or #2 player in that market. Management has a clear vision and works diligently to achieve the well communicated goals.
Cons
Some divisions have limited growth potential for employees.
Advice to Senior Management
The cumbersome annual self-review process is meaningless and has absolutely no bearing on promotions or raises.
Pros
Nice facility in Germantown. Lower-level management has some knowledge of actual products and customers. Good benefits package. Good engineers at the company.
Cons
I was laid off, so I'm probably not completely objective. Completely short-term focused upper/middle management. Only concerned about performance on a quarter-by-quarter basis and progress toward the "BHAG" (A meaningless term if ever there was one).
Advice to Senior Management
A sustainable company is one with meaningful long-term goals. Making a bunch of money in the current quarter is not the goal that will get you there.
Pros
The business is growing rapidly and proliferating. As a technology leader, JDSU values the importance of innovation. Innovation is a priority and management is committed and invested in being the best. Management also has a high degree of focus on employee engagement and growth. Career development and leadership training are a priority.
Cons
The business units at JDSU work very hard. You are judged on what you deliver, not effort. There is not much room for failure.
Advice to Senior Management
As we continue to grow as a company, we need to continue to focus on employee engagement. Career development and leadership training is integral to our success.
