Typical international corporation going through changes.

    Pros

predictable hours, friendly atmosphere, education reimbursement; mostly nice people; expected to perform the job you are hired for

    Cons

office politics; constant layoffs, competition between departments; mandatory overtime; expectation to be at work when the weather is so bad that you are advised to be off the roads

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

remember that people are people with families and lives - not just numbers that can be sliced away when the bottom line doesn't look like you want; safety is number one; cut out the dead wood

    Pros

Work with some of the greatest people, lots of personal freedom, great products. Culture at the worker level is top-notch. Vacation policy is discretionary which allows for tons of free time so long as your manager approves it (the low level managers are great).

    Cons

Too many layers of management, penny-pinching, un-trusting mid and senior level management, very little growth or lateral move opportunity, no training, low salary increases, low bonuses. Careers often feel stagnated or stalled after a few years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

remove layers of management, concentrate on employees and their training/growth, work towards long-term and not just near-term "lean" savings, invest in proven technology areas versus stripping them down to invest in "potential" markets for growth

    Pros

My last day at the Company.

    Cons

Turnover, blame, no growth, poor employee morale, ineffective top management, no trust, more turnover, hire/fire every quarter, more turnover, "snake oil" top management, acquire and fire, friends of DWH club.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior management - Fire yourself soon. Watch the stock go up. You have failed the investors who have entrusted you with their money. There is no one else to blame. If you continue down the same path, the company will be profitable someday but only one employee will be remaining....DWH.

Current Employee - Senior Software Engineer in Germantown, MD

    Pros

JDSU provides a very reasonable work/life balance with discretionary time off plan. The R&D team at the Germantown office is a tight knit group that can really help young engineers find their way in the field.

    Cons

The main focus of the JDSU senior management team is to make "the street" happy. Over the last few years every penny has been squeezed out of the organization for the sake of quarterly numbers. All of this has come at the expense of the long term outlook for the organization.

When management does decide to present a long term plan is generally comes across as marketing spin with little substance behind it.

Bonuses are based on unrealistic goals which a majority of employees have no ability to affect.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are great employees at JDSU, if you focus more on what they are saying and less on how analysts will perceive the next quarterly report things will get better.

    Pros

Great first level manager. Wonderful coworkers who are all hard working & strive for success.

    Cons

No growth for employees, do more with less. Poor work life balance. Everyone works very hard but each day is a battle due to an outsourced model that is still inefficient.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your employees with respect. Understand what your employees do before letting them go & expecting the few that remain to clean up the mess. Put the customer first! You need them.

    Pros

There are still some people left that are really great.

    Cons

JDSU business practice is to purchase companies, get as much out of them as possible and outsource what is left or dump it completely.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have some great people left in the Germantown Design group. Keep them.

    Cons

    No management communication
No opportunity to work on new projects
    No career growth
Immediate Managers need to stop looking out for themselves
They make decisions without involving team members and when it comes to actually doing the job just hand it to some poor sucker without involving them in the meetings

Management to try harder to keep talented people

Current Employee - Senior FPGA Engineer  in  Germantown, MD
Current Employee - Senior FPGA Engineer in Germantown, MD

    Pros

Motivated and responsible engineers exist and it is very nice to work with those folks rather than dealing with someone whose only focus is to get something done at all costs. Engineering designs should be done not in a hacked way, but rather while thinking of its long term consequences and affects on other sides of the bigger design, involving other projects (now and in the future)

    Cons

I don't believe there is effort coming from the senior and mid management to retain talented (and already trained for the work we do) in the company. Money as well as ranking changes I don't think are used properly to satisfy talented people. This in the long run will cripple the engineering part of the company, which will most likely affect the companies' ability to sustain its promised growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please pay more attention to retain the talented engineers with the company. Those people are hard to keep as they tend to be smarter than the rest - They will leave the company after waiting a bit if they don't get what they believe they should: Promotion (aka give them more responsibility) and money. I don't believe these two tools are used properly and on-time to keep the talent in-house.
