If you like to work at a place that lives 10 years behind the curve and makes slow decisions, come here!

I worked at JR Simplot full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    1) The one bright spot I see for Simplot is Garrett Lofto. At my time he is/was the President of the Agribusiness division. He is articulate, smart and has a vision. Unfortunately, he is so disconnected from his plant locations and working on his vision that he needs to cut some heads. Garrett needs to develop a pipeline for the younger educated employees or he will lose them all.
    2) Everyone is treated fairly and with respect.
    3) Strong safety culture.
    4) They will invest in training for you if you can prove the need.

    Cons

    1) It takes a miracle for employees to get fired from here; hence, Garrett’s problem. If there is a stronger word for complacent, insert it as the Simplot motto.
    2) Family ran business = stupid decisions repeatedly.
    3) Terrible HR at corporate level. When I am explaining to them why they need a ROTH 401k to keep younger employees you have MAJOR issues.
    4) They created an environment 30 years ago where they promoted people based on who knows what. Now they are capping other employees because they do not meet the educational requirements. It's a two faced system that upsets a lot of great and loyal employees.
    5) Retention rate is high and they boast that, but, for younger employees under 30 its terrible!
    6) If your on the manufacturing side the locations are in the middle of nowhere. Unless you like to hunt and fish I would say promotion in Simplot is non-existent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Garrett needs to clean house in HR and in upper level manufcaturign mangement to get new ideas and blood in there.

I have been working at JR Simplot full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The company has a strong foundation, has a clear strategy for competing and entering new markets.

    Cons

Many jobs are at plants and require shift work at some point in order to gain experience and move up. It can be difficult to break into the higher paying jobs, but this also shows that they are careful about who they move into upper management which in turn leads to a very strong senior management team. Poor communication skills and lack of leadership at the plant level are abundant and can be frustrating at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Corporate needs to find a way to "re-tool" the culture at the plant level. A greater focus on leadership development, although six sigma is taking us in the right direction.

I have been working at JR Simplot full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

A lot of opportunity with an intrepreneurial environment. Pay is competitive within the industry with strong bonus potential based on division performance. Employees are provided the opportunity to create success by taking reasonable, calculated risks.

    Cons

Nothing really sticks out as a down side. Upper management is receptive to concerns and complaints are addressed with reasonable resolve. The Company has experienced strong rate of growth and continues to position itself strategically for continued future growth and strength in the markets it serves.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the great work on employee safety and career opportunity development!

    I worked at JR Simplot

    Pros

Large private company with family culture. Many employess have worked with the company their entire lives 30+ years.

    Cons

Very few options for internal movement. H.R. does not exist to help employee growth. Politics is more important than keeping good people. Jobs are posted but often pulled and not filled just to see who applies. Internal gossip is rampid.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

H.R. needs to open their eyes to all the politics and distrust, but at the same time H.R. is part of the distrust.

I have been working at JR Simplot

    Pros

I have only worked for J.R Simplot Food Group for a little over a year. In that time I have moved up to a Team Lead. The abilty to move up here is up to the person you will only get out of it what you put into it. The 12hr shifts working 3 days on and having 3 days off is the reasion I wanted to work for JR Simplot. I am happy that they do see how an employee works and will give that person a chance to move up

    Cons

Some of the Cons to working at Simplot are not seeing people being held accountable for what they do. Managment not helping with Team Work or showing the respect for all employees equal. The biggest one is that Family is not able to work at the same place as a Team Lead or above. Lack of Team Work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hold people Accountable for what they do and do not do. Show the Employees that you care about what they do and reward the people who are doing good not only talk to them when the mess up. Work on Team Work

Probably the best place to work in Grand Forks, ND that pays well starting if you're applying for an operator position

    I worked at JR Simplot

    Pros

Good starting wage for an operator 12 or higher, depending on shifts
    Nice team leads and management

    Cons

Seniority. Seems like you have to work at Simplot for 20 years to snag any job or a shift. YOu can get booted from any shift from someone who as worked longer there.
    HR is a mess
Schedules are awful, they have 4, day, evening, nights and rotation

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fix the schedules up, hire part timers for weekends, get rid of the rotating shifts. Be flexible with schedules and quit the whole seniority thing. Performance should matter. Even sonorities don't make much compared to new hire. Find a way for people to get out of the Union.

I have been working at JR Simplot

    Pros

Pay and benefits are competitive for the area. The company is very proactive with respect to systems and technology, especially for the industry they are in.

    Cons

Succession planning and career mapping are virtually non-existent. The company frequently hires at all levels from outside and rarely promotes from within. Politics run extremely deep and hinder the company from capitalizing on the systems and infrastructure that exists.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promotion must come from within if the company wishes to start succeeding due to its talent and not to market-driven circumstances. Succession planning needs to actually be implemented, not just talked about.
