Invests in employees and walks the walk of being a global company

Director (Current Employee)
Teaneck, NJ

I have been working at JT International full-time for more than 5 years

ProsInternational experience, strong fundamentals of marketing, reward creativity due to challenging operating environment, and working on brands with global recognition.

ConsA lot of layers and can become too process oriented which slows speed-to-market, but management is taking steps to try and improve this...industry is controversial, not always surrounded by the best & the brightest, but if you're good, provides opportunity to standout.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to promote the values and build towards greater transparency.

Not impressed: walk the talk or don't bother with the talk

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Teaneck, NJ

I have been working at JT International

ProsGood benefits
Good work/life balance
Excellent perks for upper management
Opportunities to travel & work internationally
Generally nice facilities/office environments

ConsIt's tobacco, so you're not working with the best & brightest but there are some big egos
Parent company is Japanese, so very risk adverse
Lots of processes & procedures, so things move slowly
Poor communication/alignment across different regions, functions

Advice to Senior ManagementSaying something all the time doesn't make it true: we're neither fast nor innovative, who are you trying to kid? Concentrate on actually instilling values into the company instead of worrying about designing a new corporate look.

Great during the first 11-12 years!!!! Not so good during the last 3-4 years.

IT Director (Former Employee)
Toronto, ON (Canada)

I worked at JT International

ProsGreat compensation package, and the team below the senior management level was great, though the moral had declined over the last decade mainly due opinion of senior management.

ConsSenior management at JTI-Macdonald very much needs some fresh blood, especially the President. My most recent manager in the international headquarters in Geneva was lacking in integrity.

Advice to Senior ManagementTime to bring in a new president from the outside to allow fresh perspectives and new leadership style to come into the organization.

Over all OK place to work at current position level.

Marketing Activator Manager (Current Employee)
Trier (Germany)

I have been working at JT International

ProsGreat chance to work with people around the world, from various cultures and backgrounds. Good training in current position available, allowing future possibilities elsewhere.

ConsMajor politics, or external "off the record" activities-favors needed to move up the ladder. Knowledge, professionalism, dedication to your position will not count for promotion. HR Monopoly, meaning if you are "in" their click, then you have a chance for promotion. Nothing to do with your performance record. General Manager/Director in place who can not write the standard business correspondence, but rely on "copy & paste" from others..... hello?

Advice to Senior ManagementClean up the HR Departments and put in professionals with a fair method of judgment for the employee performance. The performance appraisal we just completed, is another joke. If you look at it, you are not getting a true picture of anything.

HQ in JTI

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Geneva (Switzerland)

I have been working at JT International

ProsA fast and dynamic company with agressive investment strategy from its Japanese owners makes this a company where with hard work you can move up quickly.

ConsAlthough there are great speeches given by senior management on company values, working on projects, and risk taking, the reality is that the managers do not live by their words. So it is fine to take a risk as long as it pays off. If it doesn't then a recrimination and mobbing culture prevails.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement needs to really believe in what it is saying, and stop just paying lip service. People need honest feedback and not a culture of mobbing
