I have been working at JWT

    Pros

    Great Midtown location. In-house bar.

    Cons

    Still a work in progress.

    Pros

2009: Good tools and creative groups. Good fact finding and research into client needs. If your work is effective, you will advance. Go to the James Web Young Leadership seminar if possible: wonderful training!
    Salary is competitive.

    Cons

2009: The environment is political and can be highly charged. Sometimes, the best ideas do not get presented. The atmosphere for creative groups is competitive, so team spirit is insincere.

    Pros

Name recognition is good, but clients are uber conservative, creative is lackluster and management of the agency is clueless.

    Cons

The leadership is just awful. Bob Jeffrey is stunningly stupid and has done NOTHING with the agency except change its name from J Walter Thompson to JWT. That was his biggest (and as far as I can tell his only) accomplishment. Sir Martin was an idiot for keeping him around.

    Advice to Management

Get Jeffrey as far away as possible and reorganize the place around talent; not people who will protect Jeffrey.

    Pros

They provide a paycheck and benefits, and have pretty cool offices. Trying to brand the agency as 'worldmade' to increase contacts with other offices.

    Cons

Nearly everything. 28% employee turnover, so faces are always changing, humiliating process of getting rid of employees (no notice, lock down your computer, 15 minutes to clear your desk and get out), lack of new clients, standard craziness of advertising agencies in general. New York leadership has been in turmoil with three Chief Creative Officers in three years.

    Advice to Management

Treat your people better. Look at how many people you lose to other agencies. Management infighting has an effect on your people, and getting anything done has so much red-tape that it's not even worth trying to create change. Take notes from the smaller agencies around the world - break the cycle of disfunction and understand your people to create a friendlier and more consistent culture. And don't be jerks when you have to let people go; it's really sucky.

  6. The worst ad agency around.

    I worked at JWT

    Pros

Name recognition but they barely produce good work these days, so that's not saying much.

    Cons

Everything. No management. HR barely exists, and even they mock how backwards the company is. All around awful and unproductive work environment.

    Advice to Management

    Get some management training.

    Cons

Great mentors but disorganized management. At times overworked.

    Pros

The office is beautiful, big name clients, benefits are great, most of the people are nice, and there's a bar.

    Cons

Some upper-levels are has-been's that made it big with traditional media (print/tv), but now struggle to have a foothold in digital. The company struggles with its digital work, smaller agencies do it better and cheaper. Large parts of floors are just filled with rows of empty cubicles, not sure if JWT is low on work.

    Advice to Management

    Embrace teaching/mentoring a little more.

    Pros

Good people, great benefits, relaxed atmosphere, nice office space and location.

    Cons

Little or no growth opportunities. Buddy system. No organized performance reviews. Rare or non-existent salary raises.

    Advice to Management

Take better care of your current employees. Complete performance reviews and career goal plans. Improve culture and internal communication within the company. Pay and promotions should be based on skills, and performance and not on friendships and favoritism.

    Pros

The office itself is a big selling point - open layout, colorful and bright architecture. Doesn't feel like a rigid, corporate environment.

    Cons

there's no way to get around traditional agency politics. JWT is still struggling to break the mold of digital advertising.

    Advice to Management

    More raises are deserved.

    Pros

JWT offers great benefits. including medical, dental and 401K participation. They are very generous with their paid holidays. It is a fun and festive atmosphere.

    Cons

The compensation could be more competitive. There is a lack of a yearly review which doesn't give you the opportunity to make a case for an increase.

    Advice to Management

A yearly review that would determine even a small increase would show that the hard work appreciated.
