Pros
- benefits package is outstanding. the best I have seen out of dozens of companies I consulted in the past
- people are fabulous in this company. energetic, helpful, play team. At least that's how I feel at IT and the business units I support. I think that covers a fair wide range of the company
- pay at IT is pretty good
Cons
- you don't really have a whole lot of chances to move around in the company. they will rather hire from outside than transitioning an employee from one role to another with some training. These employees ended up getting let go or they will just quit eventually once they find their jobs are dead ends.
Pros
Benefits, pay, co-workers, and location
Cons
nepotism is rampant and sr directors and vps are either brilliant or buffoons.
Pros
Awesome coworkers
Challenging work
Good work environment
The internal internship program was good but could have done more to do shorter term (week or month) internships to foster more cooperation.
Cons
Constantly looked down upon by other departments and senior mgmt
Company had previous incompetent mgmt
The better you were the more work you got and the more you had to pick up the slack of others
Salary and bonus weren't commensurate with the work you did
Advice to Senior Management
People work in Denver because it's a great place to work and it's not NYC. We don't want a NYC personality otherwise we'd live there. Make it Denver and stop bringing in people from NYC and instead work on developing the great employees you have. Also, start working with local colleges more to identify future great employees. Dick seems like a good guy but I wasn't around long enough to give a thumbs up or down on him.
Pros
Great benefits compared to other companies in the industry. Very good communication from the portfolio managers and analysts on a regular basis to keep everyone informed about the products, disciplines and product challenges.
Cons
Poor training that was virtually absent. New trainees were given a stack of information to read and told to basically figure things out. It felt like a sink or swim atmosphere, where the managers did not train the new hires. Expect compensation changes on a regular basis. Department was managed by fear and intimidation where employees were afraid to ask questions or voice concerns.
Advice to Senior Management
Dick Weil is a great leadership along with an open door policy. He welcomes feedback which is quite refreshing. The rest of the company could benefit from his example.
Pros
Decent benefits. Can't say much else.
Cons
Stay away from Trade Operations. Completely superficial environment and favortism galore. Management is completely incompetent unless you pucker up and lose face. After working there, completely sucked the life out of me since I refused to kiss butt.
Advice to Senior Management
Take a class or two folks...you're completely clueless. Am still completely baffled how someone can be promoted to a director position when they are absolutely imcompetent and use aggressive and/or vindictive behavior to attack anyone who questions their standing?
Pros
Good benefits and salaries are typically in the top 20 percent of comparable firms. Pleasant people and fairly competent management.
Cons
Communication from executive management to associate level can be inconsistent and the corporate grapevine is relied upon which is highly suspect at times. Management is very young and most of the senior managers that really understood the business have left the company.
Advice to Senior Management
Value experience and the elderly. To many have been forced out of the company once their salaries reached the top of ranges.
Pros
Chance to work with very talented individuals. Work environment is flexible, and co-workers are supportive and afffable.
Cons
Many changes over the past 10 years, so clients are sometimes unsure about stability.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep the foundation of Janus which is based on bottom-up research. Rely on good people working hard to find opportunites.
Pros
The people are very intelligent and tend to work well with others. I liked the amount of vacation time and sick time.
Cons
The hours can be long, but that is to be expected when working on wall street, so I guess I can't complain too much!
Advice to Senior Management
Management needs to look inwards more to find better talent. They too often bring in new people who don't agree or work well within the culture.
Pros
Strong investment performance and process
Lots of resources
Plenty of bright people
Very competitive comp
Great location (Denver)
Good work/life balance
Good benefits
Cons
Highly political work environment
Poor leadership in the C-suite
Lots of interdepartmental infighting
High employee turnover for several years
Competitive as opposed to cooperative environment
Advice to Senior Management
Do a better job than Gary Black did.
Get departments to work together as one unit instead of working against each other.
Pros
Location, location, location...if you like winter sports, you can't beat the location. Additionally, the cost of living is low compared to other financial hubs on the east and west coasts. Great benefits for families.
Cons
This company, like so many others, has an internal political structure. You have to play the game to get ahead, which might mean sacrificing family time.
Advice to Senior Management
Include your employee's family in the work-family framework. Build opportunities for families and networking between families. Happy families make happy, and loyal, employees.
