    I worked at Janus Capital

    Pros

Decent benefits. Can't say much else.

    Cons

Stay away from Trade Operations. Completely superficial environment and favortism galore. Management is completely incompetent unless you pucker up and lose face. After working there, completely sucked the life out of me since I refused to kiss butt.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a class or two folks...you're completely clueless. Am still completely baffled how someone can be promoted to a director position when they are absolutely imcompetent and use aggressive and/or vindictive behavior to attack anyone who questions their standing?

    I worked at Janus Capital

    Pros

Good benefits and salaries are typically in the top 20 percent of comparable firms. Pleasant people and fairly competent management.

    Cons

Communication from executive management to associate level can be inconsistent and the corporate grapevine is relied upon which is highly suspect at times. Management is very young and most of the senior managers that really understood the business have left the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value experience and the elderly. To many have been forced out of the company once their salaries reached the top of ranges.

    I worked at Janus Capital

    Pros

The people are very intelligent and tend to work well with others. I liked the amount of vacation time and sick time.

    Cons

The hours can be long, but that is to be expected when working on wall street, so I guess I can't complain too much!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to look inwards more to find better talent. They too often bring in new people who don't agree or work well within the culture.

    Pros

Chance to work with very talented individuals. Work environment is flexible, and co-workers are supportive and afffable.

    Cons

Many changes over the past 10 years, so clients are sometimes unsure about stability.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep the foundation of Janus which is based on bottom-up research. Rely on good people working hard to find opportunites.

    Strong investment performance and process
    Lots of resources
    Plenty of bright people
    Very competitive comp
    Great location (Denver)
    Good work/life balance
    Good benefits

    Cons

    Highly political work environment
    Poor leadership in the C-suite
    Lots of interdepartmental infighting
High employee turnover for several years
Competitive as opposed to cooperative environment

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do a better job than Gary Black did.
Get departments to work together as one unit instead of working against each other.

I have been working at Janus Capital

    Pros

Location, location, location...if you like winter sports, you can't beat the location. Additionally, the cost of living is low compared to other financial hubs on the east and west coasts. Great benefits for families.

    Cons

This company, like so many others, has an internal political structure. You have to play the game to get ahead, which might mean sacrificing family time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Include your employee's family in the work-family framework. Build opportunities for families and networking between families. Happy families make happy, and loyal, employees.

I have been working at Janus Capital

    Pros

Great benefits. Great culture. The company always does fun little outings and games for team building that are actually fun! They don't block internet usage. Some people are on facebook all day long. (that might be considered a con??)

    Cons

Way too many meetings. This is probably true of most corporations, but I swear, we have have five meetings about the SAME EXACT THING. First, with most of the company, then with a few departments, then with just your department, then your boss will probably schedule a "1 on 1" and discuss it again!! Holy smokes. I know they have to make sure the t's are crossed and the i's are dotted, but son of a gun!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Less redundancy with the meetings please!

    I worked at Janus Capital

    Pros

Good benefits and decent salary but things started going down in the last few years due to the market conditions.

    Cons

Reduced bonus payouts, increased medical premiums and kept the RIF's (Layoff's) low key (by doing them small but more frequently) to stay out of the headlines.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be careful who you promote to senior management, some of the decisions that were made seem to have discouraged the lower levels.
