Good company for entry position but no growth

    Pros

If you're coming out of college, you'll get a lot of general business and project management experience working for JETRO. You'll also be working in various industries so it's a good networking opportunity.

    Cons

There is no advancement and pretty low salary.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow national staff to move up the ladder and offer more competitive salary.

  2.

Friendly staff and great networking opportunities, but no upward mobility if you are hired as a local.

    Pros

    - Great networking opportunities
    - You get a chance to manage things you would never be allowed to as an assistant
    - Friendly staff

    Cons

    - No upward mobility
    - If you stay too long, you will have more experience than your supervisors, but will rarely (or never) get your supervisor's position

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook

    Pros

Looks great on resume if you are interested in a career with Japanese companies/organizations

    Cons

Like many public sector jobs, there is very little exciting work in the office. The salary is rather low and there is a "bamboo ceiling" for non-Japanese employees. Actually, to be more precise, there is a ceiling for any locally-hired staff. Only true JETRO staff (from Japan) are managers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Perhaps a little less micromanaging of local staff.

    Pros

It's a very safe job, career advancement, travel perks, and reasonable salary considering the level of demand in the job

    Cons

Hierarchical, seniority based, only Japanese are eligible for top positions, extremely bureaucratic, process driven, too much focus on the what, not the why. Not willing to adapt and shift with the times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Grab hold of employees, get them inspired as to why they are helping businesses trade with Japan, what it means to both Japan and the individuals involved. It's time to innovate! The whole organisation is overdue for an overhaul

    Pros

The benefits package is fairly decent.

    Cons

    Management is incompetent.
There will be no chance of promotion working here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more American staff and place them in positions of importance.
