    Pros

Just the nicest bunch of passionate, committed and fun people to be around.

    Cons

Sometimes the board politics got a little hairy, but that's normal with non-profit organizations.

I have been working at Jewish Community Center full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Being a smaller non-profit organization allows for cross departmental training. Each employee is expected to volunteer for agency-wide events for a chance to meet new members and learn from others' strengths and weaknesses.

    Cons

There are often conflicts between board members, lay leaders and staff members. Once an idea is introduced it takes too long to become a reality, if ever. Budgets are very tight and programs are driven by donations rather than need or vision.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more realistic and accept "no" as an answer.

  5.

Good perks with flex hours but often too many chiefs to please, slowing down the work flow.

I have been working at Jewish Community Center (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Somewhat flexible scheduling, many paid days off for holidays (U.S. and Jewish), generally friendly staff, membership to on-site fitness center and pool, community-based work does have rewards of the heart and spirit when programs are well-attended and appreciated by the public. Good health benefits for employee (family plans are expensive). On-site kitchen for hot lunches.

    Cons

Non-profits usually mean working with non-pros and many attitudes of privilege. Often, too many chiefs (or people who think they are most important) to please can stiffle work progress and innovation. Some voluntary event work expected (nights, weekends) as well as teach-ins (can be interesting but you are expected to stay late to finish daily work). Workload can sometimes be overbearing.

I have been working at Jewish Community Center

    Pros

The culture is a member/customer/community focus as it is a not for profit company. Employees can create your own job responsibilities for the most part. I get to do what I specialize in now after a few years of tenacity.

    Cons

Pay is low. Gossip/politics are high. Benefits out of my price range. No company match to 401b employee plan. Overworked. No training for new hires. Vacation is accrued biweekly and to be used within the current fiscal yr. Sick is accrued and capped and expires at some point after a year approx. 18 mos.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Standardize procedures building wide. Implement training for new hires. Implement a vacation buy system. Let's roll up our sleeves and get moving forward into the competitive marketplace.

I worked at Jewish Community Center part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Everyone was super lovely, there was a great work culture and the hours were very decent. I loved coming into work every day and was sad when I ultimately left.

    Cons

There wasn't enough money or compensation for the job that I completed. I ultimately had to leave and look for better opportunity to find more money.

I worked at Jewish Community Center as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

It's a fun summer time job, especially if you like kids, but who your fellow staff are can really make it or break it

    Cons

Not always organized staff and activities. Some staff members were very dramatic and difficult to work with
